Office 2003 sp3 update fails on Windows Small Business Server 2003

I receive the following errors when attempting to update to Office 2003
service patch 3 on my Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Event Log Message from SERVER01 at 12:10:16 PM Error Event 1023 in the
Application log From MsiInstaller (User domain01\Administrator)

Product: Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 - Update Office 2003 Service Pack 3
(SP3): MAINSP3 could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional
information is available in the log file C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\OfficeUpdate12\Temp\OU_MSI_519505_(00002).log.

Event Log Message from SERVER01 at 12:10:14 PM Error Event 11731 in the
Application log From MsiInstaller (User domain01\Administrator)

Product: Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 -- Error 1731. The source
installation package for the product Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 is out of
sync with the client package. Try the installation again using a valid copy
of the installation package OUTLS11.msi.

Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem may be. I performed the
same update on my Windows XP PC without a problem.

It sounds like Outlook was installed from an Admin Installation Point. The
error "installation source is out of sync" makes it sound like the admin
point has been updated but the client hasn't.

If I am on target try this.

Start, run...

msiexec /i \\FULL_UNC_PATH_TO_AIP\ OUTLS11.msi REINSTALL=ALL
REINSTALLMODE=vamus

Then try the patch again.

What exactly do you mean by "FULL_UNC_PATH_TO_AIP"

The outls11.msi file is at the following location:
\\server01\c:\clientapps\outls311.msi

I believe that Outlook was installed from the CD.

(Is there supposed to be a 3 in the filename????)

Also are you sure there is a c: in the path? Do you really mean...
\\server01\clientapps\outls11.msi

If I am right about your path.... Try this...

start, run
msiexec /i \\server01\clientapps\outls11.msi REINSTALL=ALL
REINSTALLMODE=vamus

Then try the patch again.

Reference: KB 938446, with the exception that this KB article refers to SP1
and I am having trouble with sp3, everything else looks identical to my
problem.

I have determined that the registry key
KHEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Clientsetup has an
entry ClientAppsRoot,with data of c:\ClientApps.

I have also determined that the installation point is actually
c:\ClientApps\Outlook2003.

Question #1:
Should I change the registry entry to c:\ClientApps\Outlook2003

Question #2:
Should I still run the msiexec but with the following run command:

msiexec /i \\server01\clientapps\Outlook2003\outls11.msi REINSTALL=ALL
REINSTALLMODE=vamus

Question #3:
Will exactly does the msiexec reinstall do?

I think I need some more info here also.... I didnt notice in your first
post..

So you are applying Sp3 to Office 2003 on the SBS 2003 server?
Meaning that you have installed Office 2003 Professional on the server and
you are updating the installation? If yes…

More than likely, the reason why you are having issues is because Outlook
2003 is typically set to install FROM the AIP on the SBS server to the domain
clients. Also it can be set to install on the server. (Which I would guess is
the case, but is not recommended if you are using Exchange on the SBS
server.)

Then you have installed Office 2003 Professional as well and may or may not
have installed outlook with it. If you did the server is probably confused
because it has had outlook 2003 standalone installed by the SBS server, and
Outlook 2003 from the Professional setup as well.

If you have Outlook installed on the server, my recommendation would not be
to update it to Sp3, but in fact to remove it if you are using exchange.

However…
The error message does indicate that the machine thinks it was installed
from the AIP. (which makes sense if the SBS server is assigning Outlook to
the domain machines from the client apps folder. ) You could try the command
I suggested.
To answer your questions.

1. No. The issues are not the same. In the KB they are updating Windows SBS
to Sp1, which incidentally updates the Outlook 2003 Admin Installation Point
source to (c:\ClientApps\Outlook2003 ) to sp1. This is not what you are doing
if you are trying to update a copy of outlook that is installed on the
server.

2. If you are not running exchange on the box, yes you could try it.

3. This command recaches Outlook 2003 standalone from the AIP, so that the
installed version of Outlook 2003 standalone is in sync, or is the same
version as the AIP.

Let me know if you are using exchange. If you are this post is irrelevant as
you should not use outlook and exchange on the same box.

If you are not and my suggestions are not working for you, I would then
suggest that we blow away the office installs entirely and reinstall and
patch. If Office Pro (With outlook) and Outlook standalone were both
installed on the server we can expect problems.

Thank you for your response. Yes, Outlook 2003 and Exchange are installed on
the same server. I inherited system this way. I also was not aware that this
configuration is not supported. I believe that the reason Outlook was
installed on the server was so email reporting could be handled by Veritas
Backup Exec, MS SQL 2000, and a product from TNT Software called Event Log
Monitor. All send emails under certain conditions. If I uninstall Outlook
2003 I don't know if the emails from these three software products will
continue to work.

Does this make sense?

I understand.

I would expect (but am not sure) that programs like these that you mentioned
that send email notifications do not require a specific application (ie.
outlook) to be installed in order from them to send email.

They probably have their own functionality to send emails and just need SMTP
information.
