Office 2003 SP3 Update won't install - why not?

Following a PC crash have reinstalled Windows XP Home and full install of
Office 2003 with windows update taking care of all all security patches and
autoupdates. PC now prompts to install Office 2003 SP3. However, each time I
accept this action it runs, but then reports a failure to install. Why is it
failing? And what is the work-around / solution? Advice /help most welcome.
