Office 2003 Standard OEM vs Retail ver.

Hello, I want to install Office 2003 Standard Student/Teacher edition on my
computer for my grand children. They are in senior high school. I also
qualify. My granddaughter came home with the OEM version. It is sealed and
has all the documentation with it and a receipt. I think I read in another
thread that OEM versions cannot be installed on 3 family computers. Is this
correct? We can take it back for a refund and get the retail version. We can
get the retail version for just a couple more dollars at our local VO Tech
book store. Also I have Office 2000 Pro Installed without Outlook 2000
installed. I have Outlook 2003 standalone installed (I bought it separate)
when it came out. Do I need to uninstall all of these to install the new
Office 2003 Standard. It will be the student/teacher retail version if I am
correct about not being able to install the OEM version on 3 computers. I
plan to buy one more computer probably a laptop for them. That would be 1
desktop and 1 laptop. So I need the version I can install on both. And need
to know how to install it on the one we have with Office 2000 and Outlook
2003 standalone on it. Thanks for any advice. I asked about installation in
another group but did not receive an answer.

3 PC's in the qualifying household, for 2003 S & T. OEM may only be
purchased with a NEW PC (and it stays on that PC). And a Retail version
may installed on 1 pc AND 1 portable to be used by 1 person and not
concurrently.

Here is a comparison of what is in each edition of Office 2003:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/compare.mspx

Except for additional support included in the Professional Edition, the
applications are identical in each edition. What differs is cost and
license.

A OEM edition can only be installed in complience with the EULA {End User
License Agreement} in one computer. To install the Office 2003 Student and
Teacher Edition in three computers you need the retail version.

You do not need to unistall Office 2000 prior to installing Office 2003.
During installation, you will be asked what to do with the prior version
{leave or remove}. IMO, you should uninstall the Outlook 2003 manually
prior to installing Office 2003 STE. Doing so will not remove your current
outlook.pst file. However, suggest you make a backup copy first just for
safety. If you do not uninstall Outlook 2003 prior to installing Office
2003 STE, everything should work. However. when it come to updating Office
you may cause some confusion if Outlook 2003 has different installation
media than Office 2003 STE. IMO, it will be cleaning to unistall first. To
unistall Outlook 2003 manually, just go to Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs and select Outlook 2003. Click on Remove.

Don,

Thank you very much for the very fast answer. I will do as you suggest.
First I will exchange the OEM version for a retail version so they both can
have a copy. 1 copy on the desktop and 2nd copy on laptop. Also I will
uninstall the copy of Outlook 2003 standalone from this computer and leave
the Office 2000 on it and let the new install take care of that. I have
always made sure we use original software (not pirated) and go by the
license agreement. The OEM looks to be the same as far as software, but I
would like both of them to have a copy, so we will use the retail version.
The 2003 Outlook Standalone version is a full retail version. I guess I
could still use it if I had a need in the future since it is licensed and
activated in my name, on a different computer, but I don't have one now.
Just the planned two. Again that you so much for the excellent
information.

A retail Outlook 2003 can be sold or given away provided you include the CD
and product key. If it has been more than 120 days since you activated
Outlook 2003, it can usually be activated again via the internet. At worst
the telephone activation option can be use. Of course a compatible
operating system will be needed.

Thanks Don,

Yes it has been more than 120 days. I have the original CD and all the
documents and product key. I may just hold on to it in case I have a family
member that does not live here, and may want or need it later on. And I
understand about the correct OS and thanks for the info on activation.
Thanks for your help.
