Office 2003 - Trial verification

I successfully d/l Office 2003, and successfully d/l two updates. When I open
any application it asks me to verify with option of verification by internet.
When I do that it stalls midway through and give me an error message
"communication error, try again in a few minutes." The only help on this is
to check ISP...my connection is fine, DSL. This error is not found in any of
the documentation provided, and you cannot get tech support on trial. I d/l
directly over Office 2000 which was installed by media/CD. Any help? Thanks.
