Office 2003 Update problem

N

Nick

I'm using XP Pro
Trying to update Office 2003 Pro to SP2 etc.

Files download OK but will not install

Tried Help>Detect and Repair
and get an error message "invalid Drive H:\

Tried using "Change" option in Uninstall software on the control panel and
get the same message.

Office 2003 is on my C:\ drive so suspect this it the problem why the
updates are not installing.

Question is: How can I change the drive designation from "H" to "C" so all
these functions work?

The Office 2003 programmes all seem to be working ok, just unable to repair,
uninstall, or update them.

Susan,

No, installed by me. I had to re-install the entire system after some
problems with hard drive partitioning, re-partitioning the hard drive and
re-installing windows and all the software I use. That may be how the H:\
drive confusion happened. but what I need to know is where and how to fix it.
I originally had two partitions on my C:\ drive but changed that back to a
single. I have two other drives on a RAID system but they are purely for
data storage and backup and neither is drive H:\.

Thanks for responding.

cheers,
Nick

Susan,

I now have the additional problems that whenever I try to open an Office
file by double clicking on it, I get an error message saying it can't be
found. Then Windows tries to install the updates and says it can't find
drive "H". finally the correct office programme launches without the file I
have clicked on.
Once the software has opened, however I can go to the file and open it.
The situation just gets worse and worse.

Hope you can shed some light but from the number of people on this site
having similar problems, I suspect I may be better off just finding some
other (non-microsoft) software.

cheers,
Nick

Susan (and anyone else with this problem),

I finally sorted it out after many more hours sifting through various
discussions.

First I downloaded LIStool from the web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A3-695B-42C3-9045-B812BA0FED3E&displaylang=en

and installed it.

I then used it to change the source from drive "H" (which does not exist on
my machine since I reformatted the hard drive) to drive "C"

The next time I opened an office file, it opened ok and tried to install the
updates I had downloaded but failed to install them with an error message
that it needed
SKU001.CAB from the original disk, which I did not have handy.

After another hour or so seaching this problem, I used LIStool again to
remove and disable the LIS as suggested.

I then was able to open Word, use Help>Detect and Repair to finish the
installation of the previously downloaded updates.

Rebooted as required then went back to the Microsoft update web site and
checked for more updates. There were two more sets which now downloaded and
updated automatically.

Whew, what an ordeal just to update some software, It shouldn't be this
bloody difficult.

cheers,
Nick

You're right; that was pretty difficult. But thanks for posting what worked
for you. I hope it helps someone else!
