Office 2003 update problems - KB304498 no fix

A

A diletant

I´ve spent countless hours working on this seemingly widely spread problem
with the help of KB304498 - to no avail. Turning down firewalls and
antivirus + removing
almost a third of all my "suspicious" programmes + doing the rest really
changes nothing: Office Update Installation Engine climbs to 10%, after which
the Update bar gets to 40%, and next the usual error message is there again...
For curiosity, I ran MS Baseline Security Analyzer on my computer, and the
result was that my system (Windows XP Home Ed.) has SP-1 and should be
updated to SP-2. But Windows Update keeps telling me that my computer is
up-to-date; no critical updates are missing. Besides, MSBSA couldn´t access
the Office at all.

Could this thing with WinUpdate be related with my Office Update Problem?
Or, What is this "Office Update Installation Engine"? How can I become sure
that everything is ok with it? Anyway, I feel that the core to the solution
of this mess lures in the registries and their patches...

So, Please, Chris Schatte, Susan Ramlet + all the others:
Keep on coming up with your useful suggestions!

A diletant,
Spending countless hours on a problem when your productivity decreases per $
hr, there comes a point that troubleshooting outweighs a clean installation.
This is the point that becomes the easiest solution for us.
Backup the files, settings, rules, etc, upgrade the machine per Microsoft
software (used) release...
If you follow this group you know that all installation files should be kept
locally for Windows and Office, as well, installation media for each should
be at hand if any updates or upgrades are applied.

Dear Mr. Schatte

I purchased my Office Package 2 weeks ago. Principally, I´m quite happy with
it, especially with Office Excel. And in general, I haven´t experienced
problems with
Windows XP: It works nicely with all my multilingual programmes and tasks.
But the feeling of security reaches its fulfilment when everything works
100%...

I´ve already re-installed my Office Package three times; it went fine every
single time, nothing suspicious. Moreover, I have got all the original disks
at hand; Office programmes just never prompt to use them, even when I
deliberately erased
all the installation files (which, during the installation, the disk
programme recommends to save on the hard disk for further needs).

Anyway, I´m really quite sure that you guys can work this out.
It´s just a matter of time, and I wish you luck.

A diletant,
By clean installation was refering to:
1. Format drive (after backup)
2. Reinstall Windows, update to the point of Office 2003 install
3. Install Office 2003
4. Up date Office accordingly
5. Upgrade Windows to SP2.
Upgrading Windows to SP2 at this point (on a single system) is totally up to
you. The above procedure works for us in house and for customer systems...
