Office 2003 Update to SP1 after install of XP SP2

Mike

I downloaded SP2 for XP about two weeks ago, right after it came out and have
had good luck with it except for one thing. My Office update ceased to work
anymore, but windows update works fine. Yesterday trying both client versions
I tried to update Office 2003 to SP 1, it tried to download for a couple
seconds then just said download terminated. As for the Ofiice updates not
working all together when I hit the Office autoupdate I get this message:

1. Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing
you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result
of the same problem.

2. You installed Office updates in the past and then
upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows
Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB
article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source
if Unavailable.
This seems to be a very popular problem on this forum with no definitive
answer. I would hope soon Microsoft will have an official announcement or
change the download protocol of Office to match Windows which still works?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.
I did upgrade Office 2003 from Office XP if that matters?

Set the DCOM Server Process Laucher Service to Automatic startup. Make
sure that the Windows Installer Service is likewise set to automatic.
Reboot. Check that the DCOM service is started.

Q,
Thanks for the help, I took matters into my own hands and used the
Windows Install CleanUp tool to remove Office 2003 from my system, I have my
original CD so it was no big deal, just backed up my pst file. That actually
did the trick I got a clean install of Office 2003 and now the updates work
and my pst file so far has had no problems. Our IT staff at work has been
inundated my this same complaint, I just dont think we all had a corrupted
file, highly unlikey. MS really goofed here, and to top it off they still
don't ackonwledge any common error. Instead of people having to wade through
all the "knowledgebase" meaningless pages...How about a page right up front
saying try this, then call us for free for the next 90 days while we sort out
a fix....naw that would be way to proactive and customer centric. Glad my fix
was easy, it just took a week to find this forum and then a week to get some
resolution. Hope this helps others....I can only say what worked for my PC.

My SP2 works very well -- except for the ten or twenty "little" things
like this that are beginning to annoy me more than a little. You are
correct, MS should have stepped up by now with a list of solutions for
these issues.
