Office 2003 Updates keep failing

J

JCO

OS is w2k!

My computer keeps telling me to update 3-items (KB905756, KB913807 &
KB913161).
Each time I do the updates, they fail to install. I can't figure out why.
Then the next day, the updates want to install again. This has been an
ongoing process for several days now.

What do I do?

Hello,

From the post log, I understand the following udpates cannot be
successfully isntalled on your computer:

Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)
Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)

If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

Based on my research, the issue may occur in several situations and to
narrow the issue down may be time consuming. Your patience and cooperation
are appreciated. To narrow it down, let us try the following
troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Manually install updates
========================
Please go to the link to download the update to the local hard disk and
then install it locally.

Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)

Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)

Update for Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter (KB913161)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1587ded5-a82c-447f-
9bb7-2b57554819ef&DisplayLang=en

If Step 1 doesn't work, please go on with the next steps:

Step 2: Enable Office Source Engine service
==================================
The issue could occur if the Office Source Engine service startup type is
set to "DISABLED". However, Windows Installer cannot start this service if
this service is disabled. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service. To do this,
follow these steps:

a. Click "Start", click "Run", type "services.msc" (without the quotation
marks), and then click "OK".
b. In the list of services, double-click "Office Source Engine".
c. View the option that appears in the "Startup type" list.

2. If the start type is set to "DISABLED", modify the startup type to a
setting of "Manual". To do this, right-click "DISABLED" list, click
Properties, General tab.
And then select "Manual" in the "Startup type" list, and then click "OK".

3. Try to install the Office Update locally again.

Step 3: Repair Office 2003
===================
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. If Control Panel is not in
Classic View, click Switch to Classic View.

2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

3. In the Currently installed programs list, click to select Microsoft
Office 2003 product. Click Change.

4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, select "Reinstall or
Repair", and then click Next.

5. Click to select "Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation" and
the click "Install" button.

Step 4: Disable Local Installation Source
=================================
I think that disabling the LIS would clean-up the registry setting and
might fix the issue. If the update requires source from cache and if it is
binary update, the first attempt at install might fail and the install will
switch to full file for the next detection cycle.

1. Download the Local Installation Source Tool from:
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=10FA7AA3-695B-42C3
-9045-B812BA0FED3E&displaylang=en>

2. Extract LisTool.exe and LisTool.chm to some location.

3. Run the GUI tool (LISTOOL.exe) and choose the Disable LIS option. Click
next. Select all the check boxes in the subsequent dialog. Then proceed to
Finish.

4. Try doing a detect and install again.

Please take your time to try the suggesions above and let me know the
result at your earliest convenience. I look forward to your reply.

Office 2003 product. Click Change.

4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, select "Reinstall or
Repair", and then click Next.

5. Click to select "Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation" and
the click "Install" button.

Step 4: Disable Local Installation Source
=================================

Hello,

From the post log, I understand the following udpates cannot be
successfully isntalled on your computer:

Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)
Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)

If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

Based on my research, the issue may occur in several situations and to
narrow the issue down may be time consuming. Your patience and cooperation
are appreciated. To narrow it down, let us try the following
troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Manually install updates
========================
Please go to the link to download the update to the local hard disk and
then install it locally.

If Step 1 doesn't work, please go on with the next steps:

Step 2: Enable Office Source Engine service
==================================

===================

Added note:
This error code indicates that Office Source Engine is off. This is not the
case for me.
I went to my Services and changed it to Manual & I started it.

I still get the same Error Code: 0x80070643
