For a long time now I have been unable to install critical updates for office
2003. Everytime I go to shut down it attempts to install 13 updates but they
fail to install. This has been going on for months and now my hard drive is
getting full from the downloads that do not install.

How do I remove these failed downloads to get my hard drive clear of this
clutter?

Then the real issue will be come how do get the update to install?

OS is Win XP - Pentium 4 1.5 gig ram and 100 gig HD

TaurArain -

Thank you for the suggestions.

I have worked through 7 of the 13 suggested Methods and so far no results.
I will pick back up tomorrow after I find my original XP & Office 2003 disk.

I did learn that I have not had a succesful update to my MS 2003 office
products since April 23, 2006. The end result 13 updates have been
downloaded over and over again but did not install. The total downloads are
over 4000 files. This would explain why my 100 gig hard drive is filling up.

In the interim I would like to be able to find and delete these downloads to
free up my hard drive. And suggestions. Yesterday when I did a virus scan
using MS Live care it worked for hours on files under
C:/windows/installer/.... Using window explorer and search I was unable
find where they are hidden on my C drive. Any ideal how to remove these
failed update downloads?

See if the below will hopefully fix your issue . Works for many.

Also you can check in C:\ WUTemp if you have anything. If you do then Delete them.

Try the following and report back on result.

1st Rename Office subkeys

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.

1. Close all the applications.
2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
and click Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select “Reinstall and Repair†and click Next.
7. Select “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installationâ€.
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Updates

Join the club, I've had the same problem for over a year also!
Not even MS techs can sucussefully tell how to fix it.
I'll try Peter Foldes' suggestion, and I will let you know how it goes.

I did what Peter Foldes sugested and it worked! I WAS able to update Office
2003 Prof. Ed. BUT I can't open any of its compnents like Word or Excel nor
Outlook 2003!!
When I try to open any of the Office components an Initializing instalation
window pos up and after "Product Compliance Check" asking for Product key
which I gave, it then asks for CD or file of previous edition of Office,
which I cannot find!!!!
I tried inserting my Office 2003 Prof. Ed. upgrade disk into CD dirve, but
it responds sayng no version of Office 200 or Xp ect can be found.
My 2003 Prof Ed. was an update I bought from MS years ago.
Dear oh Dear! Help Robert Foldes Help or anyone! I did the restart etc.
after updating.

OK, An update on the Office 2003 update problem. I found the CD for the
previous Office XP version and got the problem straightened out. Whew!
So what Peter Foldes sugested does work! I WAS able to update Office
2003 Prof. Ed. and I'm now able to open all Office 2003 programs.

I did a clean install of XP and all my software. Problem solved. This was a
drastic step to take but I know have a PC that is free of all the accumlated
clutter of two years of constant use. I now have 85% free hard drive and
speed I have not seen in a long while.

Thank you so much for the excellent advise and suggestions. I have know
doubt you guys would have solved my problem just as you did for Mikey11.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.
