Office 2003 will not update

DanW

At work, we have several PC's that will not update the SP2 for Offic
2003 Pro.
I have turned off the anti-virus, I have tried several repair, nada.
have even downloaded the full SP2 pack to try installing off line.
The package runs, ask if I am sure I want to install this package, an
I watch the files get expanded. Sit back and wait a few minutes and th
a box comes up and says "the update cannot be applied".
I sure wish I knew why.
If this were only on one machine I would think the PC software is bad
but so far this is happening on 35 stations.

Help please

Hi Sue,
Thank you for your help. I tried the site you gave and it did work
however, since I have over 300 hundred PC's this has to be done on, i
is a little drawn out.
However, looking back at JLGblg fix by changing the "System Managemen
size" I may be able to use this instead.
I will keep you all posted.

Dear All:
I have a similar problem and Article 884298 is useless in answering the
problem.2. I have been downloading the 2003/Service Pack 2 successfully but it does
not INSTALL. " Error 0x51F" . Several trys have proved futile.
3. ( a) As a way out I went on to reinstall/repair OFFICE 2003/PRO from my
CD. Surprisingly that does not go through giving me messages like :
Error 1404 ( Cannot delete Registry file \Software\Classes\CLSID\{A08A033D-IA75-4AB6-A166-FAS02F547959 ) <
and several others like Error 1406 ( Cannot write the value .......).
( b) There is also something about permission to edit the REGISTRY.
(c) Anyways when I went to the REGISTRY I just could not find any of the
files the error messages mentioned.Thanks,
Jamshed.

Hi, DanW,

Did you check this article?

You cannot install an Office 2003 service pack:

Would a total re-install of Office 2003 and then updating be a cure tha
does not require all of the registry editing

Peter,
First let me appoligise for not answering sooner, I have been reall
busy.
I am not sure what "WSUS" is.
If this has to do with pushing software through our network, that wil
not happen at this time. Our complete campus network system is unde
reconstruction and we do not have the bandwidth to push. I am s
looking forward to the day that happens.
But, please, tell me what the WSUS is so I can read up on it.

Thanks again.

Sue was correct when she sent you to read the KB article. However, the key
to that article is at the very, very bottom of the page:

"For more information on the Local Install Source feature of Office 2003
Setup, click the following article number to view the article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base: 830168 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830168/)
Frequently asked questions about the Local Install Source feature in Office
2003 "

If you read through KB830168, you'll find some really wonderful information.
More than likely, the LIS is not on the PC or has been corrupted in some
way. Run the LISTool to clean up the "confusion" on one PC, then try the
update. Problem should be solved. Repeat as needed.
