Firstly, let me thank all that responded so quickly
To Brian & Milly ... no need to get rude - I bought my copy from a clearance
sale and was told that the packaging had been damaged, hence I never got the
box!!!!
To Mike Hall and Beth Melton ... thankyou and yes, in future I'll be a lot
more careful.
Beth, my PC is a Pentium 4 3.67gig with 1gig memory so i think its not that
old. I have tried using XP but I simply hate it. It keeps loosing things and
I constantly have to reinstall. Thats why I prefer to stick with win98se. So
far its the most stable OP I've yet come across.

I partly agree on the reservations against WinXP. It's stable on most
factory computer models, but if you build your own you may be in trouble
(depending on the parts used, of course). Finding necessary drivers can
be hard. A fully patched Win98SE is easier to complete, and more stable
on many computers in that category.
It's too helpful for my taste, and deactivating all the tips,
information and help I don't need is a tedious task. Still, I'm geting
used to it, and it has its definite upsides, too.
If you insist on using Win98 and want a good Office package, I suggest
you download and install the beta version of OpenOffice 2. While in
beta, the last version seems very stable, and there is nothing I found
missing. (If I recal correctly it will even open old Wordpad documents
saved in the "word" format, which MS Word won't open... With that and
the Win98 compatibility, OpenOffice seems to provide better backward MS
compatibility than MS's own products. Not bad for what's best known as
an office package for linux...)
On the downside you get less templates, wizards and help, and installing
the spell check is cumbersome. On the upside you get a slightly better
database, an excellent drawing tool, language support (both user
interface and spellcheck), you'll contribute to the open source
movement, and it'll cost you nothing but network time (downloading 100MB
or so).
Alternately, you could go the ultimate stability road, installing linux
and wine. You may be able to install Office 2003 on wine, though I make
no promise!
