i recently purchased office2003 but am dismayed to find that i'm not allowed
to install it using win98se as my operating system. is there a patch
available. i'm shocked at this waste of money

No part of Office 2003 will ever install on Win98SE. You will either have to
spend another $200 or buy a new computer with Windows XP on it. Didn't you
look at the box? It says 'Requires Win2000 or XP'. Under system requirements
did you see in red that same message? This will teach you to look at the
system requirements before you buy!

And I am shocked at your reading skills. The box clearly says "Windows 2000
SP-3 or Windows XP."

Reading the "System Requirements" section is very important and this
applies to any software you purchase. I'm sorry to hear you've had to
learn such a valuable lesson.

If you plan on keeping Office 2003 and if you are still using Windows
98 then that indicates you have an older computer and it may not
qualify for upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Here are some links for the Windows requirements to review before you
buy:

Firstly, let me thank all that responded so quickly

To Brian & Milly ... no need to get rude - I bought my copy from a clearance
sale and was told that the packaging had been damaged, hence I never got the
box!!!!

To Mike Hall and Beth Melton ... thankyou and yes, in future I'll be a lot
more careful.
Beth, my PC is a Pentium 4 3.67gig with 1gig memory so i think its not that
old. I have tried using XP but I simply hate it. It keeps loosing things and
I constantly have to reinstall. Thats why I prefer to stick with win98se. So
far its the most stable OP I've yet come across.

Support for Win 98SE is over.. you should re-install XP, and if you don't
like the way it looks, or the cutesy menus, then change it to Classic mode
as I do.. time to move on, and use your new Office 2003..

I'm surprised to hear you've had issues with Windows XP. I've used
almost every version of Windows and so far I've found Windows XP to be
the most reliable and stable. And from what I've heard that's the
general consensus.

You might try using Windows XP again and if you encounter problems
then ask for help in one of the Windows XP newsgroups:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...rosoft.public.windowsxp.general&lang=en&cr=US

It could be something simple such as an incorrect driver.

I partly agree on the reservations against WinXP. It's stable on most
factory computer models, but if you build your own you may be in trouble
(depending on the parts used, of course). Finding necessary drivers can
be hard. A fully patched Win98SE is easier to complete, and more stable
on many computers in that category.

It's too helpful for my taste, and deactivating all the tips,
information and help I don't need is a tedious task. Still, I'm geting
used to it, and it has its definite upsides, too.

If you insist on using Win98 and want a good Office package, I suggest
you download and install the beta version of OpenOffice 2. While in
beta, the last version seems very stable, and there is nothing I found
missing. (If I recal correctly it will even open old Wordpad documents
saved in the "word" format, which MS Word won't open... With that and
the Win98 compatibility, OpenOffice seems to provide better backward MS
compatibility than MS's own products. Not bad for what's best known as
an office package for linux...)

On the downside you get less templates, wizards and help, and installing
the spell check is cumbersome. On the upside you get a slightly better
database, an excellent drawing tool, language support (both user
interface and spellcheck), you'll contribute to the open source
movement, and it'll cost you nothing but network time (downloading 100MB
or so).

Alternately, you could go the ultimate stability road, installing linux
and wine. You may be able to install Office 2003 on wine, though I make
no promise!

No, what you should be shocked by is your own stupidity. Had you bothered to
read the box before purchase you wouldn't have wasted your money. You're now
going to have to upgrade your operating system (assuming your system can run
XP) as punishment for being a complete moron.

Magrat, just wondering, did you bother to read Kitz reply? Now look who looks
foolish. One should never assume.
