Office 2003 word and excel - cannot open old or new documents

I recently installed office 2003 and Trend Micro internet antivrius software.
When I attempted to open an old document an error occurred stating that the
antivirus was out of date or the document was infected with a virus.
I confirmed the antivirus software was current then I scanned my computer
and found no virus.
I also noticed if I created a new document and then saved it, I could not
open it either as the same error message appeared.
I uninstalled antivirus and same error occured.
I reinstalled Office 2003 and same error.....

Any ideas???

Roy:

I had a similar problem years ago when a leading antivirus package
reported a virus on a couple of ZIP files on my machine. The problem is that
"infected" files are detected by inspecting the data configuration of the
file against known virus "footprints" (the identifications that you pay for
if you subscribe to an update service). Your Trend Micro AV software has a
footprint that it is comparing to your documents and is making a mistake.
You stated that you removed the AV software but still got the error message
regarding an infection. This isn't good. I'm suspecting that you might have
"removed" the Trend Micro software but really only "unregistered" it.
Un-install the AV package again and, this time, delete the folders (probably
somewhere in C:\Program Files) that hold the Trend Micro files. See what
happens. If the problem isn't corrected, reply to this posting and we'll
re-think.

Thanks for the help. There were a few files and deleting them still didn't
help.
I have since bought Norton and will be installing it shortly. Only time
will tell if this corrects the problem.
