my friend said he just got a office 2003. Is this a beta
or did it start shipping? Could it be that his company
received it as a volume license?

It may be that his company just got the promised CDs set for Monday for
Enterprise and Volume license customers. He may have gotten it with a new
PC although I understand they will not be available until the end of this
month.

Or he may have acquired it via other means not legal, such as via Kazaa
(where it is widely available) or another P2P channel.

It is not available at retail until October 21 and MSDN subscribers can get
it starting tomorrow.

Provantage's website says they have over 40000 copies of the Office 2003
upgrade in stock. I'm trying to get ahold of them to confirm if this is
correct.
