Office 2003

E. Glass

I had Office XP on my computer and then installed Office
2003 (the XP components were deleted). I have had no
prior problems accessing Microsoft Outlook or using the
Windows Update tool (the Office Tab). Since Office 2003
is installed the update tool is not working. The progress
bar stops at 40% and then recommends my downloading the
catalog manually.

Also, when I open my Microsoft Office Outlook program the
Windwos installer activates. This also happens with each
message that the program downloads from the server. So,
anytime there is a command the windows installer pops up
stating that it is "preparing to install" but there is
nothing to install. I deleted and re-installed the
application but that did not resolve the prob. I applied
the newest office 2003 patch..again that didn't resolve
the issue. I am at a loss. Please help. Please respond to

For the Office Update detection problem, you should follow the steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304498.

The Windows Installer activity that occurs when you launch Outlook is likely
because of a legacy Office installation that has not been completely
removed. If you see any older versions of Office displayed in Windows
Add/Remove Programs, you should uninstall it (unless you need it for some
reason). You may need to take more radical steps by using the Windows
Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the legacy Office installation. This
tool is also mentioned in 'Method 7' of the KB article referenced above.
The tool is downloadable from the KB article at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301. You should
be aware that this utility does not uninstall the product you select for
removal, but it merely removes the corrupted Windows Intaller information
for the product from the registry.
