office 2004 being updated to 2008

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Email Client: pop

am installing Office 2008 on my PowerBook G4.
in Setup assistant, it is stalled @ the screen labelled 'Existing office identities were found'.
it did find 'Main Identity (Entourage 2004)' of 27GB size [space remaining 94GB]. the instruction 'Transfer identity' has no effect- it is hung. GoBack and continue buttons are greyed- out [inactive].

There might be a problem with your database. Even though there is no real
size limit (in terms of GB) for databases in Entourage 2004 and 2008, 27GB
is absolutely huge, and I have never heard of such a big database file
before. Do you still have Entourage 2004 on your Mac? Open it while holding
down the Option key; this will launch the Database Utility, which will allow
you to rebuild your database. That process may take quite some time due to
the large size of the database itself, so leave the utility running even
when it does not appear to be doing anything. Once the process is complete,
try importing your database into Entourage 2008.

To add to Michel's comments. If the space remaining is 94 GB on your drive,
you will not be able to rebuild. You hardly have enough free space to
operate. You need a minimum of 10% free space for the system to use for
virtual memory. Even with 10% free, it's not going to rebuild a database of
this size. You are going to need around 500 GB free.

After you free up some space, I recommend these steps:

A) Verify that your Identity is not corrupt. Follow the 3 steps in this
article:

Is corruption hiding in your database?

<http://tinyurl.com/buznag>

If you were able to export, you can take those files and import directly
into Entourage 2008. If not, we can discuss how to salvage as much data as
possible.

B) If your data is verified, then we need to reduce your Identity.

1) Duplicate the Identity in the Finder. Rename the copy as "Reduce Me"
2) Open your original 27 GB Identity
3) Create a custom view to show all mail older than 90 days
4) Select all messages in the custom view and delete them.
5) Hold Option key down when opening Entourage and select Compress to reduce
the database. Now you have an Identity that 2008 can import.

C) Dealing with your older data.
Since you don't need accounts and rules in your archive, you can use the
export option as either Entourage archive (.rge) file or MBOX file from the
"Reduce Me" Identity and import that into a secondary Identity in Entourage.
Name this Identity "Archive." Now if you need to access your older mail, you
simply use "Switch Identity."

Because of the size of your Identity, the solution is going to be time
consuming and complex. If you don't have the skills or hard drive space to
do this you might have to hire a consultant to work with you. You can check
with your local MUG for recommendations. They need Entourage experience not
just general Mac. I do consultant work, you can contact me off list if you
are not able to do this yourself or find someone in your community that can
help.

Regardless of what you do, you need more space on your hard drive. You will
either have to move or delete data or buy a new drive. Your entire Entourage
database is in jeopardy with it's size coupled with the low drive space. I
hope you have backups.
