Office 2004 can't print preview or save as pdf in Word

Greetings,

I've recently installed Microsoft Office 2004 (SP2) and upgraded to the
latest edition 11.2. Upon hitting command-p to print, I cannot preview
the document, save as pdf, or use any of the additional tools. I can
print. This doesn't appear to be specific to any particular printers
as I use Xerox and HP and can print but not preview or save as pdf in
any of them.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times.

Any suggestions?

Clean install after initially tranferring information using the Mac
Migration tool from a Powerbook G4.

I can't be certain what *is* causing the problem, but I can assure you that
reinstalling Office is an utterly unnecessary waste of your time. Print
routines are a function of the printer driver & the operating system - the
program merely calls them up & hands off the data & instructions for what is
to be printed.

After installation of Office did you use Disk Utility to Repair Disk
Permissions? Do you have any other version of Office installed, or did you
have the Test Drive before getting the live version? Have you checked to
make sure you have the most current printer drivers installed?

In all honesty, I've tried everything you can on the top level (I
think). Like I said, I reinstalled the OS (clean install) and used
several permissions ordering programs (disk utility, CHUD, mac
Helpmate) to try and get that default back in place.

I agree w/ you that it's probably a function of the OS, however these
functions (print preview/save as pdf, etc...) work in all the other
apps I've tried. Only Office programs lack these functions in the
print window.

I do have all the previous versions of Office removed from the
computer. I'd prefer not to have to reload the OS again, but it's
looking like that's the only thing I can do. I do have the most
current drivers as well. This is a brand new computer w/ the most up
to date drivers, OS, Office version, etc...The only problem I think
could have occured was in my initial setup where I migrated the users
old material to this laptop. He had Office programs back to Office 98
and there could have been a mixup of permissions or something.

Does anyone know if there is a "detect and repair" program for Office
2004?

When you removed the older versions of Word/Office did you use the Remove
Office utility or did you just drag stuff to the Trash? The latter is worse
than worthless as a number of files get left behind & it makes them more
difficult to locate & remove later. If it is a newly purchased system it may
have had Test Drive preinstalled & that *must* be removed correctly before
the live version will function right. Any time you're convinced that Office
should be reinstalled - which is typically the last course of action to be
taken - The Remove Office utility needs to be used. Otherwise you're just
reloading the program to use most of the same support files that were
already there...and those are the most likely to be the source of the
problem (if Office is at fault in the first place).

I would try reinstalling the printer driver & you may want to take alook at
the troubleshooting suggestions here;

While you're at it, try re-installing QuickTime. That may update a few of
the files that are in use for the Printing operation. Very unlikely... But
maybe worth a try...
