Office 2004 data

S

Steve Hodgson

I've recently moved to Office 2008 and wondered if I can clean up any
of the Office 2004 files from my Documents folder.

I have a folder called 'Office 2004 Identities' that contains a
database at the location below:

/Users/Steve/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities/Main
Identity/Database

Now I never used Entourage 2004 and I only gave the 2008 version a
quick try before sticking with other applications. Do I need to keep
this file - I would like to lose it as it's one of the bigger files in
the Documents hierarchy.

Hi Steve:

I would be very careful here :) The fact that it is "large" means it is
"Full of your data" :)

I Would Zip it and drag it to your desktop, then see what doesn't work,
before removing it entirely.

The Entourage database stores all the integrated tasks, contacts,
appointments, reminders and project data as well as mail and newsgroup items
and rules.

I recommend that you keep Office 2004 around for a while, in case you need
it. Office 2008 is missing a lot of features, and it's fairly broken, right
now.

Whichever version of Office you run, it will require its database. If you
run both, it would be better to keep both databases around. However, you
only need to keep the "Main Identity" version. There may be several backups
in there that you can delete.

You might also wish to perform a Compact operation on the database, it may
lose quite a lot of weight if you do that. In your Microsoft Office
2004/Office folder you will find a Database Utility. Start it and follow
the instructions to compact the database.

Hope this helps
