Office 2004 install mucks up fonts in Safari

J

Jon RK

After installing Office 2004, I find that some of the fonts in which
webpages are displayed (such as WSJ.com) have been changed. For
example, formerly some pages that displayed their text using a serif
font now display with a sans-serif font. This is quite irritating.
Does anyone know what has gone wrong, or how to fix it? Thanks.

Found the fix already. I updated MathType from 5.0 to 5.1 (a free
update for 5.0 owners), which both fixed the Symbol font problem
(noted in another thread) and also restored the fonts used to display
webpages using Safari. Looks like Design Science was the culprit
here!

Come on now -- let's be fair here! We weren't provided a copy of
Office 2004 in time to re-tool MathType to make it compatible
prior to the Office 2004 launch. Frankly, I think we did a
bang-up job getting the update out this soon!

Indeed you did - very fast.

(Did you take any steps - like writing to MS Mac Business Unit - to join the
Marketing Beta which would have given you a head start?)

Logical question, Paul. I'm sure you know (but others may not)
that we supply Microsoft with the Equation Editor inside Office
2004, but despite our contacts we didn't get a beta in enough
time to have the new version of MathType ready. Of course we'd
never ship a new MathType until we've tested against the shipped
copy of Office, but that's the reason for the time delay. Not
blaming anybody or any company -- just stating facts.

Bob Mathews and Design Science, You're right, and I owe you an apology.
I thought it was fun to blame someone other than Microsoft for a change.
Flippant me, Jon RK

No problem, Jon. Most people aren't aware of what goes on behind
the scenes, and what drives the timeline of software releases. It
was a good opportunity to get the explanation out there.
