When one opens System Preferences/Accounts/Startup Items, what Microsoft
daemons should show?

There should only be 2: The Microsoft Database daemon, and optionally the
Microsoft AU Daemon. The database daemon watches your user database to alert
you to alarms and events. The Auto Update daemon regularly (at your option)
looks at the Microsoft site to see if there are any software updates.

Thanks very much for clearing up my confusion. Auto Update is a useful
option that I had not noticed in Office X.

It's a new feature with 2004 - which will, I hope, make it *much* easier
for users to keep Office 2004 updated, instead of having to mess around
with tracking down version numbers of obscure files to tell which
updates had already been applied.
