Office 2004 Not Recognising LAN Connection - Other Applications Not Impacted

Hi Guys,

OK, this is bugging the hell out of me and I'm hoping that someone can
help. Basically, the problem seems to be that Office 2004 applications
appear to be dumb to fact that my PowerBook with OS 10.3.7 is connected
to the office network by Ethernet. To give an example of the problems,
if I select a hyperlink in Word 2004, I receive the message "Unable to
open <URL>. Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server". The
same thing happens in Excel, whilst Entourage 2004 would not, until
yesterday, connect to either the IMAP email server or LDAP server. Why
Entourage now works is beyond me (I have a theory that I'll explain in
a moment) but it used to give an Error -3260 and the message "The
connection to the server failed because the network is unavailable.".
However, while Entourage now seems to want to play nicely, it won't
download images in HTML emails, so it looks like it is still having
problems.

The issue with this, of course, is that my network connection works
fine for other applications. I can surf the Inter/intranet via Safari,
collect email using Mail, and connect to other PCs on the network. We
have a proxy server that is configured in the global Network settings
(as Automatic Proxy Configuration only; all other options are disabled)
and, of course, my location is set to the location with the proxy
settings. I have also disabled all network adaptors except Ethernet for
my "Office" location but this doesn't seem to make any difference.

In regards to why Entourage suddenly seems able to collect my email, my
theory is that it has something to do with Mail in that after I set the
mail server up in Mail, suddenly Entourage had no problems getting a
connection. I can't think of any real explanation but the timing is
remarkably coincidental.

Has anyone else had this problem (particularly on a network with a
proxy server)? Does Office 2004 maintain its own "local" network
settings rather than using the Global settings? Is my installation of
either Office 2004 or Panther screwed? Any ideas?

Regards,

Kelmon
