Office 2004 on Mac Document Issue.

hi Everyone,

One of my friends is having a problem:

Network Setup:

He has a small Network at his home/office where 4 of the computers are on
MAC platform & Office 2004 for MAC and 2 computers are on windows XP which
are using Office 2003.

Issue :

When a person running on the MAC platform with Office 2004 sends an office
document to one of the machines running on Office 2003; When this document
is opened in Office 2003 application on this machine, the spell check
feature disables itself. This is happening with all office documents like
Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook (spell check is not working when we use
word as email editor), etc..... The interesting thing is that this document
can opened from the other computer running on windows XP and Office 2003.
This is happening only on this machine. Moreover this customer was having
this problem on office XP to resolve it he installed office 2003, he is
still having the same issue, one thing which I know for sure is that this is
not a problem with the office applications as the same document works fine
on the other machine running office 2003.

Methods tried:
1. Tried to access on the network and open it from there.
2. Tried sending the document via email and opened it from there.

How do we solve this issue ? What could be causing this ? I would be
grateful if one of the MVP's could respond with some suggestions.

I would be grateful, thanks and cheers

Hi Sampy,

A key piece of information is missing. Did your friend run the updates
for both Office 2003 and Office 2004? If the updates are not
installed, please ask your friend to install the updates then try again.

So can the user not spell check at all? Or is it that the automatic feature
(check as you type) stops? And when the dialogs that control this are
accessed, is the feature turned off and refuses to start?

And it's Mac, not MAC. Mac is short for Macintosh, not an acronym.

hi Tim,

THanks for the Update :) I used MAC by mistake. Spell check feature doesnt
work at all. It is as if it isnt present. All the spell check options are
greyed out as well.

hi Jim,

I cross checked about this with my friend. Yes all the updates have been
installed for office 2003 and Office 2004.

Cheers :)

hi Daiya,

Thanks a lot for your timely response. This seems to be like an issue on the
specific computer. This is because other computers are able to use the spell
check option for such documents. I also opened some of these documents from
the Mac machine on my computer - it worked fine. I have a feeling that this
is more specific to the computer that is reacting to the Mac document. Can
we try anything other than reinstall of office on this computer.

Cheers :)

Sorry, missed the part where it was the *Win* machine was having the
problem.

Haven't a clue how to fix problems with WinWord. You'll have to ask
somewhere else. But tell them the spelling options are grayed out. From
here, Support on the left will take you to product-specific sites that might
list grayed out spelling options as a known issue; Communities will take you
to all the newsgroups hosted by MS.
