office 2004 pro and OS X 10.4

Hi, I'm looking into getting office 2004 professional for my mac
(powerbook G4, OS X 10.4.9) because it includes virtual PC, but when I
look at the system requirements, they say office pro is compatible
with OS X 10.2.8 and 10.3. On the other hand, the office 2004
standard and student editions say they are compatible with OS X 10.2.8
and later. Is this correct, or a typo? Is office 2004 professional
really not compatible with my operating system? Am I better off
getting the standard version and virtual PC seperately?
Thanks!

You need Virtual PC version 7 (the one that supporets G5 processors). VPC7
works with OS 10.4 and later.

Microsoft Office Professional includes Virtual PC Version 6, which will not
work with Mac OS higher than 10.3.9.

So to answer your question: You need to buy the two separately. Which
means buy the "Student" edition if you are entitled to do so (which IS the
Standard edition: the only difference is in the terms of the licence).

Cheers

I'm in your corner on this one Daiya :)

In fact, that's exactly what I have - Mac:Office 2004 Professional - which
came with VPC 7/Win XP & runs as advertised on [currently] OS X 10.4.9

Perhaps the question may be "where" is the OP looking at these
specifications? It could be older literature or a vintage package - maybe
inventory that shipped prior to the release of OS X 10.4?

I honestly can't remember whether the *initial* release of 2004 included VPC
6 (I don't think so, but I just don't recall for sure). If it did, the
source may be attempting to unload outdated product. However, I still think
Office X Pro shipped with VPC 6, Office 2004 Pro with VPC 7.

I was thinking vintage package, too, but the Mactopia Sys Reqs page is off.

I do remember a delay with VPC7, so this may be a change that happened
at some point.

Thanks for the feedback - I'm glad to know someone else is running the
Office Pro package on OS X 10.4.9.
Now to find the sweetest deal...
