Office 2004 Pro

I am interested in purchasing Office 2004 Pro. I understand it comes with
Virtual PC 7. Does anyone know what Microsoft operating system the upgrade
or the regular edition comes with?

Thank you,

Bob

Hi

The plans seem to be that Virtual PC version 7 will be available with
Wiindows XP Service Pack 2.

Hi Jim

Do you know if it will be necessary to upgrade the OS to XP in
order to install the VPC upgrade, or will it be possible to
continue to use an older OS. I'm happy enough with W2K which
seems to adequately serve my limited Windows needs. There are,
however, several shortcomings in VPC 6x such as poor USB handling
that would inspire me to buy the VPC upgrade if they were fixed.

Thanks

Hi Claude,

The idea of VPC is that it emulates the processor, so Win2K should run.
There's no way to tell for sure until the product hits the shelves,
though. Win2K itself is not so hot for USB.

I'd wait till VPC7 is out a few days then post a message to this group
inquiring whether or not the specific USB device has been tried by
anyone using VPC7.

Hi

Thanks for the answer. I'm mainly wondering if the VPC upgrade will
be locked to XP and not allow the earlier OS. Sounds as if it will
allow existing installations to continue to work. I'll revisit
the subject after the release.

thanks again

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. Hopefully the upgrade will
be available minus the OS so that folks can use what they already
have if they choose to do so.

That's one of the options on the page I cited.

Yeah, but it's not real clear on which options will be available
with the entire Office Pro upgrade, which is probably the way I'd
like to go. I might have missed that part.

Thanks again

I don't see anything on mactopia, but I was under the impression that
Office 2004 Pro would only come with Windows XP.

Well, maybe the cost of Office non-Pro plus the VPC standalone upgrade
will be comparable to the cost of the Pro upgrade. Time will tell.

I have no need or desire to use XP at this time for this machine.

I checked on this and you should be able to use your own copy of Windows
2000 with the version of Virtual PC 7 included with Office 2004. It
includes Windows XP but you don't have to use it.

It would probably be in your best interest to purchase the Professional
Version upgrade, since it will only be $329.

Thanks for the update. The "Professional" upgrade was what I
have been considering. I'll be upgrading when it is released.
I have a few legacy Windows apps that I occasionally use that
work fine under 2000 and I'd prefer to not go thru the hassle
of upgrading the OS if it is not mandatory.

Thanks again

There have been reports that Office Professional is now reaching consumers.
Time to buy!

Pretty soon.

I have another question about the upgrade license that perhaps
you know the answer to.

I bought OfficeX and have a legal copy with serial number, etc.

I bought the Connectix version of Virtual PC before MS bought Connectix.

How does the VPC 7 upgrade work with the Connectix VPC6?

Is there anything special I need to think about before I install the upgrade?

Presumably, not, but I'd rather ask a semi-dumb question than get stuck.

thanks

Claude
