Office 2004 requires Admin users??

Ichiro

For some reason my post from earlier today just dissapeared.
So I will try again

I noticed with Office 2004, the OS-X user has to be setup as ADMIN.
If the user is using a "network home folder" or setup as a "Standard"
user I get
"File is in use in a different location" error while saving and
sometimes trying to open files.
Even from local disks.

Anyone have a solution for this?
I can reproduce it with different computers and versions of os-x (10.3
- 10.3.5)

Yeah it's not a very clear error message... I suspect the installer requires
Admin privileges so that the installation can be accessible by all users on
the Mac. If you don't want to authenticate to install it, you can try the
install by drag and drop from the CD to whatever location you want. I don't
know what will happen at first launch though... The app might ask you for an
admin password again...

I would say it's a "by design" problem... Most similar apps require an admin
password to be installed.

Im not talking about installing the software.
That works just fine, Im talking about using the software after its installed.
If the user only has "Standard" privleges then I get that error.
It happens on multiple computers.

Im starting to wonder if my build of Office 2004 is different from the
Retail version.
I work at a Non-Profit so we get the special pricing and "unlicenced" disk...

The content of the CD should be exactly the same. We have an Education
Site license here and the only difference is that the serial number is
already in the installer (no need to retype it when you install) but
beside that, the CD is the same.

I've never seen the problem you are describing here. Are you sure
Permissions are OK on the Mac ?? Did you try rebuilding them ?? Did you
tune up the NetInfo Manager at all ?? (I hope you didn't install the
applciation as root :-\ ).

Yes I have checked the permission, even re-installed OS-X.
New install of OS-X, first thing I did was run the Office Installer.
Its very strange.

Im going to call MS and get another media disk just in case.

There is one thing I have not tried yet, drag the folder onto the HD
from the installer disk instead of using the "installer".

This would be an easy test to do (and hopefuly it will work :-\ ).
