Office 2004 screwed up OS X fonts?

Dunno if this is indeed the case, but ever since I
installed Office 2004 for Mac, my special fonts like
Symbol, Wingdings, don't show anymore in my non-Office
documents. And I NEED Symbol for my scientific
presentations.

For example, in TextEdit or Keynote, when I pull down the
Font Control panel to change font to Symbol, I don't even
get the Symbol preview, just the default font, Lucida
Grande. Same for OmniGraffle. However, when I open up Font
Book, these fonts show up without a problem.

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling fonts, but to no
avail. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions
on how to troubleshoot?

THat sure isn't the case for me. Office 2004 installs a new enriched
version of these fonts (a Unicode version) and I can use the Font
palette in all the apps you mention to insert whatever character I want
from these fonts.
This might indicate that it could be a Font conflict issu on your Mac

If you have MacOS X 10.3, you can try using FontBook to disble some
fonts in batches to see whether it fixes the problem.
