Office 2004 Service Pack - Excel compile error (and solution)

F

Faust Tiger

Installing Microsoft's Service Pack 1 for Office 2004 causes a conflict
in Excel 2004 causes a "Compile error in hidden module: autoexec"
message whenever (100%) exiting application.

This problem has been reported elsewhere, but I found the problem.

SOLUTION:
This is a conflict with Adobe Reader (and/or Acrobat Professional) 6.0.2.

Removing the file "PDFMaker.xla" from the Office/Startup/Excel folder
solves the Compile Error.

I believe this file is installed by Adobe Reader 6.0.2 or Acrobat
Professional 6.0.2. Not sure which.

Since the similar PC Windows Office Compile Error problem concerned
add-ins to Word, I just looked for similar add-ins to Office 2004.

Interestingly, the similar Adobe/PDF add-in files:
Office/Startup/PowerPoint/PDFMaker.ppa
Office/Startup/Word/PDFMaker.dog
Do not cause any similar compile errors for their similar applications.

1 Introduction
This service pack addresses several security and stability issues with
Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Entourage for Office 2004,
Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) Client 1.0.3 for Mac, and
Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications for Office 2004.

2 Installation

2.1 System requirements
You must have Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later installed on your computer to
install this service pack.

Before you install the service pack, check to ensure that Microsoft
Office 2004 or any Office 2004 program (Word 2004, PowerPoint 2004,
Entourage 2004, or Excel 2004) is installed on your computer.

Note We strongly recommend that system administrators apply this
service pack before deploying Entourage 2004 within an organization.
This service pack fixes many Entourage issues, including migration
issues from Entourage X.

2.2 Installing the service pack
1. Before you install the service pack, close all Office 2004 programs,
including Office Notifications, and disable any virus-protection
programs.
2. Double-click Office 2004 11.1 Update on your hard disk to begin the
installation.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

2.3 Troubleshooting
If you have trouble installing the service pack, check the following:

o Quit any programs that are running, including virus-protection
programs and any Office programs because they might interfere with
installation. Then restart your computer and try installing the service
pack again.
o Make sure that the user account you use to log on to your computer is
an administrator account. For more information about administrator
accounts, see Mac Help.
o Make sure Aladdin Systems StuffIt Expander version 6 or later is
installed on your computer. If an earlier version of StuffIt Expander is
installed on your computer, you might not be able to install this
download.
o Make sure you have downloaded the correct language version of the
service pack for your copy of Office.
o If you have problems using Office programs after you install this
service pack, reinstall Office from your Office 2004 CD-ROM and then
install the service pack again.

3 Improvements included in Office 2004 11.1
The improvements described below fix numerous security and stability
issues in Office 2004.

3.1 Improvements for Word 2004

3.1.1 AutoRecover functions correctly when FileVault is enabled
Previously, setting the AutoRecover folder location (Word menu,
Preferences command, File Locations) to a location inside a
FileVault-protected home folder did not work. This has been fixed.
FileVault is an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 128-bit keys
that secures your home folder by automatically encrypting the contents.
For more information about FileVault, see Apple Help.

3.1.2 Security is improved when you open a document that has macros
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now support an additional level of security
that affects macros that open other Office documents containing macros.
You can use the Application.AutomationSecurity property to set the level
of security desired. For more information about the
Application.AutomationSecurity property, see Knowledge Base (KB) article
KB 886633 at http://support.microsoft.com.

3.1.3 Text changes to the font selected on the Font menu
In some cases, a font change did not take effect when you used the Font
menu. This happened when the WYSIWYG font and style menus check box was
cleared in Preferences (on the Word menu, click Preferences, and then
click the General tab) and then the Font menu was used to change the
font of text in a document. This problem has been fixed. The text now
changes to the font that you select in the Font menu.

3.1.4 Swiss German proofing tools are correctly detected
Previously, the Compatibility Report in Word erroneously reported the
following:

Swiss German proofing tools are not installed.

This problem has been fixed. Text marked as Swiss German text is proofed
using the German proofing tools, which are installed by default. The
Compatibility Report no longer reports this issue.

3.1.5 Text selection is improved
Previously, when you double-clicked a word to select it, and then
dragged the selection to include more words, Word sometimes selected the
preceding word in addition to the words you selected. This problem has
been fixed. Word no longer selects the word preceding the word you
select.

3.2 Improvements for PowerPoint 2004

3.2.1 Performance is improved when you play movies in a slide show
When you play a movie in a slide show, performance is improved,
resulting in movies playing more smoothly in most cases.

3.2.2 Compatibility with fonts is improved
Compatibility with fonts is improved, resulting in better overall
appearance of fonts. Font compatibility includes Open Type fonts, symbol
fonts, and fonts used in presentations created in other versions of
PowerPoint.

3.2.3 Dragging objects on a slide works correctly when the ruler is
turned on
When you drag an object on your slide and the ruler is turned on, the
object now remains in the position where you put it.

3.2.4 Security is improved when you open a document that has macros
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now support an additional level of security
that affects macros that open other Office documents containing macros.
You can use the Application.AutomationSecurity property to set the level
of security desired. For more information about the
Application.AutomationSecurity property, see Knowledge Base (KB) article
KB 886633 at http://support.microsoft.com.

3.3 Improvements for Excel 2004

3.3.1 Security is improved when you open a document that has macros
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now support an additional level of security
that affects macros that open other Office documents containing macros.
You can use the Application.AutomationSecurity property to set the level
of security desired. For more information about the
Application.AutomationSecurity property, see Knowledge Base (KB) article
KB 886633 at http://support.microsoft.com.

3.4 Improvements for Entourage 2004

3.4.1 Entourage icon remains stationary when a connection error occurs
When a connection error occurs and an error log entry is generated, the
Entourage icon will no longer bounce in the Dock.

3.4.2 Sent messages display Sent status in the Microsoft Outlook Info
Bar
In some cases, messages sent from Entourage did not appear in the Info
Bar as ³Sent² when viewed in Microsoft Outlook. This has been fixed.
Now, when a message is sent from Entourage, the Info Bar shows the
message as ³Sent² when viewed in Microsoft Outlook.

3.4.3 Connection to the Internet by using an internal modem is improved
Previously, connecting to the Internet by using an internal modem could
cause problems. Entourage attempted to connect to another internal modem
or Infrared Data Association (IrDA) wireless device after it made a
Point-to-Point (PPP) connection to an external modem. This problem has
been fixed. Entourage now connects to the Internet using the current
connection.

3.4.4 SMTP using SSL connections is improved
Sending e-mail messages by using SSL connections sometimes caused
problems. In some cases, the message was not sent. This problem has been
fixed.

3.4.5 Pictures from iPhoto can be attached to an e-mail message
Attaching pictures from iPhoto to e-mail messages sometimes caused
problems. In some cases, a file with the file name Attachment (PlayerPro
document).669 was attached instead. This problem has been fixed.

3.4.6 Microsoft User Data folder is accessible from network volume
Accessing your Microsoft User Data folder from a network volume
sometimes caused problems. In some cases, when you attempted to access
the folder, the following messages appeared:

o Entourage cannot access your data. To attempt to fix the problem,
rebuild your database.
o An unknown (16008) error occurred.

This problem has been fixed.

3.4.7 Keyboard shortcuts in Adobe CS products are available when
Entourage is open
In some cases, keyboard shortcuts in Adobe CS products were not
available when Entourage was open on your computer. This problem has
been fixed. Keyboard shortcuts are now available in Adobe CS products
when Entourage is open on your computer.

3.4.8 Entourage can connect to Domino IMAP servers
Entourage could not connect to Domino IMAP servers that use
double-backslash ³\\² as a directory separator. This problem has been
fixed.

3.4.9 SSL support for Exchange delegate access is improved
Entourage 2004 now allows Exchange delegate access over SSL.

3.4.10 Connecting to a POP account is improved
Connection to a POP account when using Entourage sometimes caused
problems. In some cases, Entourage did not detect that the server had
closed the connection. This problem has been fixed.

3.5 Improvements for Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) Client
Remote Desktop Connection Client 1.0.3 for Mac provides improved
stability when you minimize the client window and when you copy and
paste data from the client window to Macintosh applications. Stability
is also improved for users of Mac OS X 10.3 and later, and when Remote
Desktop Connection Client is used on Macintosh computers with PowerPC G5
processors.
