Office 2004 (Stud & Tea) wont run on MacBook

J

jeej

Hey,

If I run the Office Assistant off the CD the icon appears in my bar
and bounces for a second, then just disappears. If I manually copy
the files across, they do copy fine, but then when I go to run any of
the Office components they do the same as the Office Assistant, they
bounce for a second then disappear. Only MSN Messenger works.

What is going on here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gavin

They could be crashing. Have you looked in
/Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter to see if there are crash logs for
these applications? The crash log will sometimes give you an indication
of what's causing the problem.

There was a crash log for Word, but it seems to be referring to Office
X that I had installed a while back...

Translated Code Information:

Rosetta Version: 17.25
Args: /Applications/Microsoft Office X/Microsoft Word /Applications/
Microsoft Office X/Microsoft Word -psn_0_39976961
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

Hi Gavin:

First: Run the Office Remover application TWICE to make sure any dead bits
of failed installations are gone.

2) Install Office 2004 by drag-and-drop. The Installer won't work properly
in 10.5.

3) BEFORE trying to start any of the applications, download and apply
Office Updates 10.3.5 through 10.3.9 in the order they are numbered.

You should be good to go then.

I think he may be 'gooder to go' using the 11.3.5 - 11.3.9 updates if this
is Office 2004:)

Yup, I did that, installed them all... but still it does the same
thing. The icon bounces for a moment... then disappears!

Doh!

You "Removed Office", re-installed, applied the updates in the correct
order, and THEN attempted to start an office program?

* If you don't use the Remove Office Tool, you cannot re-install ‹ the
files are already on the disk so they will not be changed.

* If you don't re-install, the updaters can't run (it can't update software
that isn't there!)

* If you attempt to run any of the Office applications before the last
updater has run, you get the problem back (your "new format" data will not
work with the "old format" office applications).

It may help to re-name the content of your Microsoft User Data file before
you do this. Don't delete it, you WILL want it back. Just re-name it. It
may be that running the un-updated version has corrupted your database.
That can cause this problem.

Cheers

Yup, I did everything exactly as you said to.

Those Microsoft User Data folders are empty. The structure is Office
2004 Identities > Main Identity, then that folder is empty. Is this
bad?

Thanks again for the help.

Yes!! This is were your Entourage data is stored. In addition some of the
office files are stored in Microsoft User Data folder like Normal.

Use "Remove Office" then install from CD and update. You'll need to delete
the Microsoft User Data folder so a new one with the proper files can be
installed.

Mactopia Downloads
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx>

You need to get these updaters:

11.3.5 combo
11.3.6 requires 11.3.5 to be installed
11.3.7 requires 11.3.6 to be installed
11.3.8 requires 11.3.7 to be installed
11.3.9 requires 11.3.8 to be installed

Hi

I deleted the Microsoft User Data folder like you said. However I
couldn't run the installer from the disc (like I said in my initial
post) because it bounces and disappears. So I had to copy the files
across manually - which means I still don't have a Microsoft User Data
folder. Either way, with the updates installed, I am still at the
same point.

I might have to try the suggestion of downloading that combo update -
shame it is nearly 300mb though!

When you launch Entourage it will automatically install the Microsoft User
Data folder.

It really sounds like you need to use the combo. If your system files were
in good working order the Microsoft installer wouldn't be giving you the
bouncing problem. Sometimes your base files are so messed up you have to do
an "Archive & Install" to get working again.

How to use "Archive & Install"

Make sure to choose the options to maintain your user settings. Once the
install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the disk you
have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.3.3, that's what version of OS
will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate Combo Updater
from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version. After you run
the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any additional
updates.

Still no joy! Downloaded the combo file, ran it, it installed and
rebooted... still get the bouncing then disappearing. :-(

The console should be able to tell you what might be happening.

To me, it relly looks like somethign quite fishy is going on. It could
be a permission issue (DIsk Utility is your friend and can fix that for
you) or something even deeper..... .DO you have problems launching any
other application??

Test the CD on another computer to verify that it's working. IF it works
then test in a new User on your computer. If that works then it's your Users
folder. If it doesn't work then it's your computer. If it's your computer
you'll need to do the "Archive & Install".

My permissions are fine, the CD is fine. I'll try and install on a

Just one thing jumped out at me... You don't mention that you ran the
Office Remover tool.

If you didn't, the preferences on your computer from the previous
installation, and the application files from the current installation, are
out of synch, and this is what happens.

You need to do a drag-and-drop install of Office 2004, THEN run the Office
Remover tool (which will take out all the preference files).

THEN do another drag-and-drop install.

Then apply all the updaters in the correct sequence.

Then Office should create the Microsoft User Data folder for you when it
does its first run of any application.

Hope this helps
