Office 2004 Student/home edition not working with internet

I've recently run in to a problem with any of my Office 2004 programs (besides messenger?). If my computer is connected to the internet, these programs will open for about 30 seconds and then 'unexpectedly quit'. My mom bought the home and student version, and there are still available licenses for me to download, but she is in another provinces... so I hoped I would be able to find another solution to this problem.
If anyone has any advice that may help me with this problem, it would be greatly appreciated!

Start by going to the Help menu in one of the applications and trying the
"Check for Updates" mechanism.

If that doesn't fix it, download updates 11.3.5 and on up to the latest, and
apply them all in sequence.

That should fix it. If it doesn't, come back here and we'll talk you
through "Option B".
