Office 2004 Update 11.2.5 - Missing Apps

M

Marcel

Hi,

Just a cautionary tale.

I updated office last night with the 11.2.5 patch. Now Entourage,
Powerpoint and Excel are missing. Spotlight can't find them and they
are not in the trash. They have vanished from the
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/ folder. Word is still there and
works.

I guess I will just have to re-install from the disc. Don't know what
caused it the log only documents things written to the disk not erased.

Hi Marcel -

Are you sure it was the 11.2.*5* update that caused the problem, not
11.2.*6* ? That is most ikely becausethe former is a major update, but just
want to be clear.

I know it isn't much consolation, but this is the only such report that's
come across the board :)

Can you think of anything that may have occurred during the installation of
the update that may have cause the hiccup? Were any other programs/processes
running at the time? Any details would be much appreciated.

Your plan of attack sounds to be the best bet - Just be sure to use the
Remove Office utility as per the information here:

including emptying the Trash & use of Repair Disk Permissions. Otherwise the
reinstallation will very likely not be successful.

Please reply to this thread with your results.

Definetly the 11.2.*5* as I then did 11.2.*6* hoping it would magically
bring back my apps.

Unfortunately, no longer true.

Nothing I can think of, had cyberduck, firefox and textmate open.

Thanks for the link, I followed it exactly and all apps are back and
working fine, including Entourage (with all my email still in there). I
have updated to 11.2.*5*, but am too scared to do any other updates at
the moment.

Thanks,

Matthew.

Thanks for posting back - glad all is well :)

I wouldn't worry about problems with the 11.2.6 update as it is nowhere near
the extent of '5. It should be safe enough.

If it's any help, I ran the update on two Macs without any problem
whatsoever.

As a general point, I have NEVER had any problems installing new
software, or applying updates. If it helps, this is my method:

* sort out what updates/installations I want;
* repair disk permissions
* restart computer (if it has been on longer than just to repair
permissions)
* make sure NO applications are open (that is, the ones I control. I
know that there are background things working somewhere, but I know
nothing about them and don't want to touch!)
* install
* repair disk permissions
* restart computer

This has never failed me yet, and may be of assistance.
