Office 2004 update disaster!

Hi! I have automatic updates for MS Office enabled on my computer, and
I returned from work yesterday to find that I can no longer open my
Entourage (error I/O) after said update took place! When I try to open
my mail, the MS utility app pops up and asks if I want to try
verifying, rebuilding, compacting database, but after a few secs gives
me same error message. Is there any way for me to uninstall that
update? I also get an error message after I open up Word, PowerPoint,
Excel about the frameworks (or something like that) library.

Framework errors usually mean that one or more components of Office
haven't been updated properly. Try reapplying the update. If you'd
rather, you can download the update from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

Make sure you repair permissions before and after you update.

This IS a disaster, by the way. Yesterday, immediately after installing the
update, Excel crashed on launch but Word, PowerPoint and Entourage still
worked. So I reinstalled Excel from the disks and this fixed Excel. But
today, Word crashes on launch. Luckily, Entourage has not given me any
trouble yet.

Reparing permissions in Disk Utility did not fix the problem.

I'm going to restart tonight and see if that fixes it. If I don't write
back tomorrow, that probably means that Entourage started crashing.

This has also been reported on macfixit.com; it's their headline for today.

It's a disaster all right!

By the way, I have an Intel Core Duo Mac Mini, 10.4.8. If anyone from
Microsoft Mac Business Unit reads this and wants me to run some tests, let
me know.

I think that Mac BU needs to issue a bulletin on this. What will happen if
the AutoUpdater runs again next week? Will Office become hosed again?

I understand there were a few (serious) problems with an update Microsoft
issued a week ago 11.3.2 which fortunately I missed because I do not use
autoupdate. In fact my main Mac is not connected to the Internet at all.

Microsoft has issued a new update 11.3.3 which may fix your problems, if
11.2.2 was the cause. I hope it is - because they are then easily fixed!

No, you didn't understand. Office was working fine UNTIL AutoUpdate
installed 11.3.3. Please re-read my earlier post and others'.

Now, here is an update. After quitting Entourage, it won't launch any more
either. And then Excel wouldn't launch either.

So, I then reinstalled the whole stupid Office (except for Messenger) from
the Office:mac 2004 CD.

Then, it wouldn't open my Entourage Database since it had been created with
a newer version.

So, then I launched Word, did menu > Help > Check for Updates, and re-ran
the stupid update again.

After that, everything seemed to work OK.

So, the summary is: If you do the 11.3.3 update and then Office programs
start crashing on launch, you need to reinstall Office from the 2004 CDs and
then re-do the update.

(And then reconsider if you really want to continue using Office!)

Sorry Jerry, did not pick up on the 11.3.3. Glad to hear everything is
working fine now.

I had no problems with 11.3.3. Also I tend to use InDesign for a lot of
stuff instead of Word, and I am always looking out for alternative to MS
Office. Problem is most of my clients still stick with MS Office.

Does this crashing occur with 10.3.9 on a PPC? It would be nice to know
before I attemt the update.

Hi Sol:

11.3.2 was no problem at all -- I got it by mistake and it worked fine :)

It contained some patches and fixes that had not completed final testing.
11.3.3 puts the same ones in now that they HAVE completed testing.

Cheers

Hi Axel:

It almost never occurs for anyone.

So far, the only reports we have seen have been in 10.4.x, so the answer to
your question is "we have not seen any reports of it happening in 10.3.9.

I'm running in 10.3.9 and you're seeing this from Entourage 2004 versions
11.3.3 :)

It appears possible that something (possibly Spotlight... If they knew what
it was, they'd fix it... ) can interfere with the updater's attempt to write
files to disk at a critical point in the process.

If it happens, it's damned frightening but not a big disaster:

1) Run the Remove Office tool
2) Drag-and-drop install from the Office CD
3) Re-apply the 11.3 updater
4) Reapply the 11.3.3 updater.

Problem solved :)

Cheers

Ah! Thank you. My 11.3.2 runs fine too. So I'm just interested in the
security updates in 11.3.3.

Then, Bob's your uncle :)

I'm having issues with the latest update. When I open an Excel Document it
beings to scroll horizontally and does not stop. The same issue happens when
I'm in Entourage. How do I remove this update and restore prior to this
update?

Regards, Tom.

We cannot answer this question until after you provide details of your
hardware and software. For example:

"I have an Apple iBook PPC with a 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of memory
running OS 10.3.9 and Office 2004 11.3.3".

Cheers

I/O error almost always means disk damage.
