Office 2004 update failure

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I have a Mac iBook G4 with a recently installed OS 10.5.2 (i.e., Leopard). During the last month or so, when I've been prompted to update my Microsoft Office 2004 by my OS, the update seems to download nicely, but when the installation process commences, I receive the following message:
"The installer could not locate the correct version of the software required to install this update. See the Read Me file included with this installer to determine if your software meets the requirements for this update."
Assuming my system is adequate, I simply reinstalled Office 2004 with the expectation of fixing this deficit. This reinstallation, however, did not fix the problem. (And, in fact, I've now installed an Office 2004 version that has NEVER been updated, so may be limited in its utility and/or security.) Can anyone advise me on: (1) how to find or activate the appropriate installer; (2) how to otherwise beat this problem; and (3) advise as to whether there is a security risk in never updating the original Office 2004? Most appreciated, indeed.

Several users have reported this and there is no clear answer. You must
update past 11.3.5, or Entourage will not open. The last couple of updates
have been security updates so I would install the 11.3.5 which is a combo
updater and stop there. There are 5 small incremental updaters that don't do
much. I understand a new combo updater will be released soon. I would wait
on it to update fully.

Have you moved Office from the boot drive root Application folder?

How did you install Leopard?

There are 3 types of installs:

1. Upgrade Mac OS X (the default upgrade method)*
2. Archive and Install
3. Erase and Install

* Just because it's the default doesn't mean it's the best option.

This page describes what each method does and why you might be having
problems:

My problem is that when I installed Leopard, all my emails suddenly started coming into my "Travel" folder rather than into the subfolders I have set up with "Rules." (I have Office 2004.) I've never had this problem before and don't know how to fix it. Anyone else having this problem? (I will try updating Office with the most recent update and see if that helps.

I appreciate your remarks. It seems that I must wait until a comprehensive update tool is available. It seems though that my basic problem (before I reinstalled Office 2004) was that: "The installer could not locate the correct version of the software required to install this update." Why is this? Is there a way to obtain the appropriate installer? Presumably I'll need this when I do my comprehensive update when software becomes available. True? What security risks, if any, am I taking by using Office 2004, Version 11.0?

1) Look for a Mailing List Manager rule that is sending your messages to
Travel.
2) Check the folder destinations in each rule. You have to reset them.

If #1 fixes the problem, it had nothing to do with Leopard. If #2 works,
then.....

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Well 11.0 will not open your Entourage database. Since there was a database
format change shortly after Entourage was released, Entourage 11.0 cannot
open a database saved in later version. You will get this error:

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message means, for example, that Entourage is at 11.0, but the saved
database was saved in a more updated version like 11.4.

The problem does not affect everyone, so no new installer will be
forthcoming.

It seems as if every update they throw in some security update. What if
anything they do, I have no clue.
