Office 2004 upgrade availability?

Eric

Will an unpgrade from 10.1.3 to the new Office 2004 be
offered for the student addition? Or will everyone have to
buy a new student edition?

Eric,

I am sure that when MS settles on a pricing scheme they will let us know via
their website. MS does not officially monitor these newsgroups, and I am
sure that the few people that do contribute to these groups that are also
part of the MacBU are bound by some type of NDA until that information is
officially put out.

So far, the only information that I have seen about the available editions
is:
€ Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Standard Edition. This includes Word
2004, Excel 2004, PowerPoint 2004, Entourage 2004 and MSN Messenger Version
4.0.

€ Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Student and Teacher Edition. This is
the same offering as Standard Edition, but is available for a discounted
price for qualified students and teachers.

€ Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Professional Edition. This is the
same offering as Standard Edition, but also includes Microsoft Virtual PC
for Mac Version 7 with Windows XP Professional.

In the past, I don't recall seeing an "upgrade" version for the Student and
Teacher Edition for either Windows or Mac version, but who knows. They may
surprise you.

Now would be the time to send them suggestions about pricing schemes before
they are set in stone.

Student editions are not upgradeable, so you'll have to buy a new
student edition for 2004. However, the price of the student edition
is significantly below the price of the standard upgrade (and still
includes three licenses instead of one).

The only exception will be that new purchases of the v.X student
edition on or after January 6th will be eligible for a free upgrade
to the 2004 student version when it ships this spring.

As long as you qualify for student/teacher pricing, buying the new
version is by far the cheapest "upgrade" path.

Hi

I don't think the free upgrade applies to the Student/Teacher edition. Be
sure to check with your vendor to be sure.

Re upgrading student editions--the coupon seems to say any version, but you
need to include a box top product ID, or something like, so it is possible
that the specially discounted student editions that are sold at certain
schools (by special arrangment for an even lower price, but packaging
consists only of a CD case) will not qualify for the free upgrade. At least
that's the impression I got, reading the small print on the PDF coupon that
I downloaded from the mactopia site. "Free" upgrade also includes a $25
shipping and handling fee, obviously still a bargain.

Hi

There is a difference between the license for "Student/Teacher" edition and
"volume" edition licenses.

Some campuses have negotiated special deals with Microsoft that are lower in
price than the academic price of the "Student/Teacher" edition. The special
deals, sometimes referred to as "volume" licenses, can have terms that
require the institution to provide things like support or distribution
instead of Microsoft providing these services. These special agreements are
not eligible for the upgrade, but such institutions might have an even
better deal than the upgrade price. Check with your on-campus distributor or
licensing agent for the details of your campus agreement.

Thanks, Jim. Good to know what my product is technically called. But the
price was so nice not being eligible for the upgrade is pretty fair.

I'm not happy atm. I purchased office one jan 7 and now I find I need
the box top. That was the first thing I thru away. When I purchased
it, I was told I would receive a free upgrade to 2004. I was told I
would only need a receipt.

What now?

Who told you you would only need the receipt? If it was the store that sold
it to you, go back there and argue the case.

Alternatively, ask the support line at
