Office 2004 Upgrade from Office 98 Macintosh Edition Upgrade

I am looking into purchasing the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Standard
Edition Upgrade - and would like some clarification on my eligibility
(along with the installation procedure)...

1. Could you confirm whether I am eligible for the Microsoft Office
2004 for Mac Standard Edition Upgrade as a registered user of Microsoft
Office 98 Macintosh Edition Upgrade (as the literature on the Microsoft
website does not specifically mention the Office 98 Upgrade version)?

2. I am intending to install Microsoft Office 2004 on Mac OS x 10.4
Tiger. However I do not have Mac OS 9.2 [Classic] installed - meaning
that I will not have my previous version of Microsoft Office 98
installed. I understand that the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Standard
Edition Upgrade will try to locate a version of Office that entitles me
to the upgrade during the installation process (or when I launch one of
the applications e.g. Word for the first time). The suggested solution
to this issue seems to be to copy (drag-and-drop) the Microsoft Office
2004 folder to my hard disk, and then point the installer to the Office
98 CD in order to complete the upgrade. Can anyone confirm that this is
definitely the case, i.e. they have tried it and it works?

3. If I was to purchase a new Intel-based Apple Mac in the future,
would the above procedure (of pointing the installer to the Office 98
CD in order to complete the upgrade) still work. I only ask as Classic
applications do not work on Intel-based Macs, i.e. would the Office
2004 installer be able to recognise the Office 98 CD?

Many thanks in advance.

According to the info below you qualify for the upgrade price of $239 - your
upgrade to 98 makes you a legitimate Registered User of that version. I
wouldn't wait too long, though, as it has been suggested that the upgrade
eligibility may be revised at 'some point'.

Have not had occasion to do it myself, but my understanding is that you need
only insert the 98 CD in the drive & point to it when prompted. Perhaps
someone else will come along to confirm/negate that.

Depending on how far into the future we're talking about Office 12 _may_ be
a reality, which would eliminate the concern. In the meantime, however, 2004
is actually a full install so there should not be a problem. The next
version will also be a full install, so having the '04 disk should suffice.
Assuming the point above is valid, you might want to hold onto your 98 CD
for 'posterity'.

That's correct. I found the wording of the instruction to point to the CD
was confusing when it came up (can't remember what it was) but that's what
you do.
