Office 2004 vs. Office v.X ??

I'm about to upgrade to Mac OS X. Which version of Office do I want to upgrade to? Will they both run on Panther? What is the difference between the two (in a nutshell)

Office 2004 is the latest version of Office, I don't see why you'd
even consider getting Office X (except that you might be able to find
it cheaper now that it's several years old).
