Office 2004 won't run on Xserve

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I need to run Office 2004 on my Xserve. I don't use the application frequently, but need the excel and word portions intermittently.

I have have XServe 10.5.2, all the current updates running on a dual core 2.5Ghz PowerMac. Everything seems to run fine on the server.

I installed my Office 2004 on this machine after deleting 2004 and upgrading to 2008 on my workstation (a MacBook Pro). The installation process seems to work fine on the server, as did the MS autoupdate process. All of the Office updates appear to have installed correctly and without difficulty.

When I try to launch Office 2004, Word gives me the logon logo, and then disappears. When I try to launch Excel, it gets to the choose application screen and then freezes, requiring a force quit. Powerpoint acts like Excel.

What is wrong? I assume that Office 2004 works on Leopard XServe. All of my software is totally updated, the server has 5Gb of RAM. All other applications seem to work just fine.

Help!

So you expect to run an older version from the server while you have a
newer version installed locally?

Thanks for your reply.

Not quite sure what you mean. I use a local login on the Xserve running on the PowerMac, effectively using it as a workstation when I log in locally. Simple to log in, apps (at least all others I have tried!) run fine on the server. I do not expect to run the application remotely from any other machine. The server in this mode is functioning as a local workstation.

The MacBook Pro has 2008 installed locally, and the Xserve has 2004 installed locally. And yes, I expect to run the two applications on two different machines just fine. There should be no interaction for these two applications except perhaps to share files at separate times asynchronously.

Why not make life much easier and settle on one version?
