Office 2004

Purchased Office v.X 2003 upgrade from 2001 in January
2004 with provision that Office 2004 can be obtained for
free when available. In trying to install Office 2003
according to instructions in "Setting Up Microsoft Office
v.X, Step 2, the Setup Assistant menu "personalize"
appears. Here is where you are to enter personal
information and CD key. However, this menu did not
appear, so information could not be entered. I do not
know if installation actually took place. When going into
an application, Word and About, the Office 2001 Product
ID appears, not the Office 2003 ID. Without a proper
installation of 2003, I am unable to obtain the free
Office 2004. I have tried many times to get help from
Microsoft, by e-mail and by phone. Their Web Site is
totally useless for this kind of a problem.

First - Office 2003 is a Windows-only product, so it makes things less
confusing if you just refer to Office X.

Second - You don't need to have Office v.X installed to order your copy
of Office 2004 - you just need to send in your coupon along with a
receipt and boxtop (at least in the US - my other languages are poor,
but the German coupon looked like it had the same requirements as the US
coupon)

As for the problem installing Office v.X:

Try running the Remove Office application from the Office v.X
installation disk (it's in the Value Pack folder). Remove any Office v.X
installations you find (if you have a relatively recent machine, you may
have gotten Office v.X Test Drive preinstalled).

Then install Office v.X again.
