Office 2007 B2TR - problems with normal.dotm

I

Ian Blackburn

Just installed the Technical Refresh on 2 machines. One was fine. The other
has a problem whenever starting Word.

Steps to recreate:
1. Start Word 2007 B2TR
2. I recieve the message:
"The office open xml file normal.dotm cannot be opened because there are
problems with the contents" "No error detail available"
3. Clicking ok then offers the following:
Word found unreadable content in Normal.dotm. Do you want to recover the
contents of the document. If you trust the source of this document, click Yes
4. Click Yes starts a "Configuration Progress" dialog with the message:
"configuring Microsoft Office Professionalm Plus 2007 (Beta)" This takes
quite a few minutes after which Word starts.
5. Exiting Word and starting again will cause all the above to happen again.

I have tried deleting Normal.dotm completely and it was recreated
automatically, but did not solve the problem

Anyone have any ideas?

Kind regards,

Ian

I am having the same problem so if someone could please help address this
issue that would be great! I also get the Configuration Progress dialog
whenever I start an Office 2007 program after the Beta 2 Technical Refresh.
Any help would be great...

In addition to this, I have a similar problem with opening items in Outlook -
I get the Configuration Progress dialog and a message about NormalEmail.dotm

Unfortunately the solution offered (renaming the normal.dotm file) only works
first time for me- Word create the new file, but after that it returns to the
same problem detailed above...

Someone reported the identical problem to me. He only solved it when he
removed all Office 2003 applications. If you are up for it, I'd try
removing Visio 2003 and see what happens. He had Visio 2003 installed as
well, so I am thinking this might be the culprit.

Hi Patrick (sorry for calling you Peter before!) - that has made some
progress however there are new issues with Word saving documents.

Here's the steps I took:

1) Uninstalled FrontPage 2003
2) Uninstalled Visio 2003
3) Copied then deleted templates in %appData%\Microsoft\Templates
3) Started Word - complained that MSXML 5 was not installed.
4) Ran Office 2007 setup and did repair
5) Reboot
6) Started Word - started OK (templates NOT recreated)
7) Created and then click save for a document in Word - Configuration dialog
displayed "Configuring Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 (BETA)" - long
wait...Then it complained again about not having MSXML 5.0 and crashed.
8) Started Outlook - all OK
9) Opened email, calendar other items in Outlook - all OK
10) Interestingly there are no new documents in
%appData%\Microsoft\Templates - I don't appear to have normal.dotm and
normalEmail.dotm at all?

Should I reapply the TR?

Patrick Schmid

I don't think reapplying the TR would help. It prob. wouldn't run.
You might have to uninstall all of Office 2007, reinstall all the Beta 2
applications you want and then install B2TR again.

You have a different issue. Follow the steps Beth gave you in your other
thread.

You're right - B2TR would not run - just said that it was already installed.

I then uninistalled all of office 2007 and tried a re-install. However this
failed with various errors. So I have given up on this machine now and put
office 2003 back on.

Is there a clean-up tool available yet to get rid of any registry entries
etc that 2007 may have left?

Hello:

I dont know to what extent I am correct. I am closely following your thread
since I have the same issue. I personally feel that the latest XP update is
the culprit for this problem. I restored the PC to a previous date and
everything works fine.

Murthy
