For the beta/trial copies online activation is the only method supported. There was a problem with the online activation servers
but you should now be able to activate.

No - telephone activation is the only method for the beta which will expire in 2 weeks anyway.

Why not dump it, get a 60 day trial and actually enjoy the released, mostly non-buggy version before deciding to buy?
