Office 2007 Beta on WIN2K Professional SP4

J

Jay Somerset

I know that the "systems specifications" for this beta say "XP SP2".
However, will it run on Win2K SP4? Is there any problem that would cause
problems on WIN2K, or has it just not been tested in that OS environment?

it would be easy to make the new products compatible if they wanted to..
but how are they going to force you to upgrade?
They want a steady flow of cash from you to them....

Hi Jay,

MS Windows 2000 has reached the end of its 'Mainstream' (regular updates) support cycle. Windows XP and newer are the platforms
Microsoft has chosen for the 2007 Office products. More information on the support lifecycles of MS products is available on
http://microsoft.com/lifecycle

File converters (open and save) for use with pre-2007 Office versions will work on Windows 2000 or higher.

Its different to not offer support for a product on a platform and its
different
to FORCE people to get a new OS just to run a program.

The first is logical because they cannot give help for an OS forever, the
other is logical for their pockets!

Oh, so I suppose you could run Office 2003 on Windows 98 or Windows ME then,
eh?

Get over it. All companies stop supporting old outdated technology
eventually - just look at Apple.

Hi John,

Well, not sure about the 'forcing' part <g>, but for Office 2003 a similar issue came up when the Windows 9x/ME and Windows NT
versions could no longer be used with that version and there is at least one feature for Office 2003 that doesn't work on Windows
2000 because it's not in that version of Windows.

In some instances it's not just the age of Windows 2000 for the 2007 release of Office but features built into Windows
XP/2003/Vista that are help the Office apps provide features they can't on older Windows versions. (Office basically stopped
shipping OS update components after the 2000 version of Office as it tended to complicate things for maintaining a system by users).
