OFFICE 2007 - COMPATABILITY MODE

R

RENEE

Have just installed Office 2007 and when I try to use an earlier version in
compatability mode (I have Windows Vista Ultimate installed), I get the error
message that the compatability mode is not responding. Either I have to
close the program and open it again and hope for the best, or wait a while
until it does respond. This happens frequently.

Same here. This is really agravating. It seems that I am not able to work
more than few minutes and it just happens. I don't know yet what the trigger
is (compatibility mode?) but it is a major pain... My document is about 3MB.
Anybody else?

Don't know if this will help you, but I had an add-in that was not
compatable. I removed it and have not had this problem for a while. Check
your add-ins and find out whether they work with your current version of
Windows and Office.

I'm having the same problem, and even Geek Squad, my court of last resort,
was a waste of money--nothing works!

R

RENEE

Unfortunately, I am having the same problem again. Evidently, this is a
major flaw with Office 2007 that Microsoft again has not bothered to fix.
You will find that many people are having the same problem and wasting
countless hours trying to repair the flaws in Microsoft Office. If anyone
comes up with an answer that actually works and stays working, a lot of us
would be most appreciative.

I'm not sure I'm following exactly what you are saying. To clarify, you have
Office 2007 installed and if you are working on a document created in an
earlier version of Office you encounter an error?

If that's the case, does the issue continue to occur if you use Word in Safe
Mode? For Safe Mode, hold the Ctrl key and start Word. Continue holding Ctrl
until you are prompted to start in Safe Mode.

Also, what is the exact text of the error message?

The message I get frequently when opening and, also when using, Microsoft
Word 2007 is "Word not responding" Asks me to close and says Microsoft will
notify me if there is a solution - which I never receive any answer to. I
have Windows Vista Ultimate and, infrequently I get the same error message
with Excel. I have run the repair Word - says nothing wrong. I have removed
add-ins - same problem. Sometimes, I have to reboot several times to get
Word to even open. I even renamed my normal.dot - absolutely will repair
this problem and others are saying the same thing.

Does this occur if you start the applications using Safe Mode? As previously
noted, to start Safe Mode, hold Ctrl and start Word (or Excel) and continue
holding Ctrl until prompted to start in Safe Mode.

Note that there are some add-ins that aren't listed in the application so
there could still be an add-in causing the issue.

I'm confused and would appreciate some clarification.

Does this happen only when you are running in compatibility mode or does it
happen if you are running Word in standard 2007 mode?

So far we have been assuming that this is a problem with the compatibility
option, but I am guessing that compatibility mode is a red herring and that
you have a 'general' fault with Word 2007 that is nothing to do with
compatibility.

I'm having the same problem; the doument can be opened in "Safe Mode".

I ran Regedit (as Administrator) and navigated to Word's data key and delete
it (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data).
That worked temporarily as I could open Word normally; however, upon opening
a .doc (not a .docx) from Outlook the same problem* occurred.

*Problem:
"Microsoft Office Word has stopped working.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close
the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Again deleting the data key helped to get Word opening normally. But I just
can't open a .doc unless I open Word in "Safe Mode".

Terry Farrell

Did you save the Outlook attachment to your local HDD before opening it in
Word?

M

Michael

No I did not, so I tried and it doesn't make a difference... I started from
scratch (at the point of deleting Word's data key in which case Word opens
normally from the Start menu [Vista Ultimate]), saved the attachement, and
had the same error. Tried one more time with just a .doc, and every time I
try to open a .doc, I end up with the same error.

Interesting note: .docx documents will open fine until a .doc (received from
someone not using Office 2007) causes the error; then all .doc and .docx
documents fail to open (except in safe mode, my current workaround).

Bizarre symptoms indeed. I've not come across this one before. I'm gonna
think it about it more overnight.

My first thoughts are that it may be a bad third party add-in> Would you
find and disable the add-ins and test again please.

This helped: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13880_3-9874528-68.html

I didn't actually disable Add-Ins, but ran the Microsoft Office Diagnostics
in the first step of the article with these resuts:
Diagnostics run: 5
Diagnostics that identified problems: 1
Diagnostics that took corrective actions: 1

There was a link to "Detailed results" that highlighted "Check for known
solutions". Under that was provided the following information:
"Satus: Completed
The check for known solutions was completed successfully. There are no
solutions which require your attention."

Not quite sure what that means. I sort of get the feeling it means
Diagnostics fixed something that was known to be wrong but wants me to keep
my curious little nose out of its business. --rather rude.

For now, I am able to open attachements without having to first start Word
in Safe Mode that previously I could not.

Well, it didn't work for long. I double-clicked on a .docx document and we're
back to the error:

"Microsoft Office Word has stopped Working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close
the program and notify you if a solution is available.

If I restart the computer, I can get Word to open from the Start menu
without having to start in Safe Mode, and once I get that message above,
unless I restart, I have to start Word in Safe Mode.

I'm going to restart and turn off all Add-Ins.
