Office 2007 continually configures itself

P

Peter Skinner

For some reason Office 2007 continually configures itself.

It is installed, but every time I run one of the installed programs, it
configures again and again. I have tried to re-install it, repair it,
diagnose the issue, but I can't seem to fix it. This is an install CD
from my Technet subscription, but this happens when I use my retail CD
of Office 2003 as well.

Operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

Any ideas?

Hi Peter,

It is mostly caused that the current user account doesn't have permission on the Office registry key. Follow the steps below to see if it works.

#1
========
1. Login as a local administrator account on the computer.
2. Start the Microsoft office 2007 applications (word 2007, excel 2007, powerpoint 2007).
3. If the configuration pops up, wait it to be finished.
4. Logoff and logon your user account. Test the issue. What is the result?

If it doesn't work, go to next step.

#2
=======
1. Log on to the computer by using an Administrator user account.
2. Click Start > Run > type regedit, click OK.
3. Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0
4. Click Permissions.
5. Click Users (Computer_name\Users), and then click to select the Allow check box for the Full Control permission.
6. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
7. Start an Office program. Wait for the configurating finished. Restart the application. What is the result?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Emily Lin

it usually means the windows installer is broken. Are you using both office
2003 and 2007 on the same system? That can cause issues too.

Hi Emily,

I tried both solutions and both yield the same results.

The configuration window again shows itself and configures each time I
start an application.

What else can I try? Is this a Vista issue?

How do I repair the Windows Installer?

Basically repair it in the programs window?

should be some kbs on it. my method was to install something else,
preferably something I rarely used, so it would be unhooked from office and
hooked to the newly installed program.

if you have both versions of office installed and are using them, you might
get the config screen more often because it really doesn't need to do some
configuring.

I just tried to install something else, and the same thing happened.

It seems I will waste less time by just restoring this laptop back to
factory and starting again rather than trying to fix this issue.

Hi Peter,

If you want to reinstall/repair the Windows Installer, you can refer to the following KB article to install Windows Installer 4.5 Beta to see if it
works.

935695 Windows Installer 4.5 Beta is now available
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;935695

Have you performed the steps I listed in my first reply? If anything is unclear, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hi Peter,

How are things going? Is Office 2007 working fine now? I have not heard back from you in a few days and wanted to check on the status of
the problem. Please let me know how the troubleshooting steps turned out.
