Office 2007 data loss on flash drives

We had made the switch from Office 2003 to Office 2007 and downloaded the
converter for the formats. We are now running into the problem with users
loosing files (mostly from word) on their flash drives. I've found the
problem to be that when Office 2007 converts a 2003 file to a 2007 format on
the flash drive itself, it creates and saves to a temparary hidden version of
the file. When the user finds sees that the file is missing they panic and
pull the flash drive out of the computer and deleting the file they need.

I've e-mailed instructions to all users that they need to copy their
document to the desktop, save the file there, then copy it back to their
flash drive to prevent data loss, but they obviously can't read. Is there a
patch, plug-in, download, or something that can fix this bug?

Are your users ignoring "Safely Remove Hardware" in the Toolbar too?
Windows should prevent dismounting the flash drive until Office is done
converting the file. It sounds as if they need a course in safely removing
hardware too.

I looked at that being the issue, but when I went to recreate the peoblem I
noticed the temparary file that Microsoft made that was hidden to normal
users. I also tried safely removing the flash drives by closing everything
down and Windows let me remove the drive. Upon inserting the flash drive
again, the temp file was deleted.

You might want to tell your users to work only on files on the hd & save
there, only use flash drives for copying data for transport to another
location - it sounds similar to the problems that can be experienced in
using floppies to edit data
