Office 2007 deleted by itself?

Has anyone experienced Office 2007 automatically being deleted from a
Vista machine?

I have a friend who just described his problems:

1. doc files come up with an error that the win32 application to run
this file can not be found.
2. Shortcuts to the applications are broken
3. The contents of the C:/Program FIles/Microsoft Office/Office12
directory does not seem to have much in it.

I am going to see the laptop tomorrow, but in the mean time, is there
a virus or something known that could cause this? My friend said he
had not changed or done anything to the machine, eg. did not install
or uninstall anything.

The machine has current anyi-virus software running on it. He is
running a full system scan and I will get the results tomorrow.

Any suggestions or help would be great though.

I had installed a retail copy (Office 2007 Standard), unless it
somehow did not properly register or something. How do I check to
see if this is what happened?

Did you install it over the top of the Trial version by any chance
