Office 2007, documents end in .DOCX, Why?

I have the office 2007 and i just noticed that my documents end in .DOCX, is
that normal? & Can the older versions on office open the office 2007 files?
I am having problems with people being able to open my documents. Please
help!

Yes it is normal. Office 2007 uses a new format which is incompatible with
older versions of Office.
Can the older versions on office open the office 2007 files?

Yes but you'll have to install an add-on software on PCs that use older
versions of Office (2000, 2002, 2003). It's free. You can get it from the

In addition to John's reply, you can set Office 2007 programs to save by
default in Office '97-2003 file format. Each program has to be set
separately.

To do this start one of the programs (I'll use Word here) left click on the
Office Orb then click on "Word Options" at the bottom of the window that
opens. Click Save and then click the dropdown box to the right of "Save
files in this format:" and find "Word 97-2003 document (*.doc) or similar
for other programs.

Remember each program would have to have the save default changed if this is
the desired file format.
