Office 2007 documents slow to open - updated

H

Herb Tyson [MVP]

When you open a "slow" document in Word, do you see a message in the status
bar indicating that it is trying to connect to a template that's located on
a server?

D

Daisy Cao [MSFT]

Hi Matt,

Have you tired Windows clean boot? Do you check Herb's suggestion? If you
encounter any kind of error when the slow open issue occurs, don't hesitate
to let us know, the error message is great help to narrow down the root
cause.

There is no message in the status bar. It looks like Excel has just been
opened up on it's own. It gives the impression that no document is loading.

Thanks Daisy,

I tried a clean boot but couldn't narrow it down as sometimes the error
occured, sometimes it didn't. I could find a common thread.

Hello Matt,

Thank you for updating the post. I understand the issue appears randomly in
clean boot environment.

Matt, performing clean boot environment is to prevent any unnecessary
application starting when windows is booting. Please let us know if the
issue occurs when we just start Windows in clean boot?

In clean boot, we can still start applications manually, please monitor
when the issue happens, it may be a third party software cannot coexist
with Office applications.

Meanwhile, please narrow down the problem with following steps:

1. Does the issue occur on all files or only on specific files?

2. Have you tried DDE solution in another post?

3. You may also run Word, Excel in safe mode to test the issue.

Winword /a

Excel /safe

I am looking forward to your reply.

Note, if you cannot find the thread sometimes, you can contact me directly
at my account (e-mail address removed). Hope we can make some progress soon.

Daisy,

The problem has occured in a clean boot environment - just not everytime. I
have tried removing the DDE option but as soon as I close the window and go
back in to check, DDE has been selected automatically - I can't turn it off.

Hi Matt,

When we start Windows without third party applications, we are in clean
boot environment, however, if you manually open third party software, it is
not a clean boot environment then.

Therefore, we need to check if Office application works when we just
booting the computer to clean boot? If so, manually open the third party
software one by one, and test the Office application every time, we can
then find the problematic third party software which affects Office
programs performance.

Also, start word in safe mode, open Word file from Office button > open,
could we open the file faster the first time?

Please also confirm this question:

1. Does the issue occur on all files or only on specific files?

Thank you. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Daisy Cao

Hi Daisy,

I think I have managed to get some stable results. With all non MS services
the XL document loads at a speed expected, however if the file name is has
spaces in it XL throws an error message saying it can't locate the filename
parts within the spaces - but still loads the file.

If I start the McAfee services and reboot the stall problem is back.

I am now going to take this up with McAfee and will keep you posted.

| Hi Matt,
|
| When we start Windows without third party applications, we are in clean
| boot environment, however, if you manually open third party software, it
is
| not a clean boot environment then.
|
|
|
|
|

Hi Daisy,

Thanks for all your help. This one is not over unfortunately. Once I had
tracked the problem to McAfee I contact McAfee support and arranged a WebEx
session. When I tried to show the support guys the problem it wouldn't play
ball and the documents opened within seconds! I'll have to wait for it to
resurface try again. One thing that I have noticed is that I am unable to
remove the "use DDE" option in the file types. I deselect it close the dialog
and go back in to confirm and it is re-enabled.
Now if I try and open an Excel attachment/file with spaces in the filename I
get error messages saying it can't open the file. For example, if I try and
open a file with the name "This is a test.xlsx", I get error messages:

Can't open "This.xlsx"
Can't open "Is.xlsx"
Can't open "A.xlsx"
"Can't open Test.xlsx"

Then the file opens.

| Hi Daisy,
|
| I think I have managed to get some stable results. With all non MS
services
| the XL document loads at a speed expected, however if the file name is
has
| spaces in it XL throws an error message saying it can't locate the
filename
| parts within the spaces - but still loads the file.
|
| If I start the McAfee services and reboot the stall problem is back.
|
| I am now going to take this up with McAfee and will keep you posted.

Hi Matt,

I created a file called "this is a test file.xlsx", it opens immediately
without any error.

I would double confirm if this issue occurs in Windows clean boot? Please
also test the issue with Word 2007 and let us know the result.

I have searched our internal database but cannot find any information to
this strange issue, you may send me your test file "This is a test.xlsx", I
will check if it takes specific formatting to cause the issue.

You can send me the file at (e-mail address removed).

Also, if you have any update of the issue, don't hesitate to post back
here, we can discuss together.

Regards,

Daisy Cao

| Hi Matt,
|
| I created a file called "this is a test file.xlsx", it opens immediately
| without any error.
|
| I would double confirm if this issue occurs in Windows clean boot? Please
| also test the issue with Word 2007 and let us know the result.
|
| I have searched our internal database but cannot find any information to
| this strange issue, you may send me your test file "This is a test.xlsx",
I
| will check if it takes specific formatting to cause the issue.
|
| You can send me the file at (e-mail address removed).
|
| Also, if you have any update of the issue, don't hesitate to post back
| here, we can discuss together.

| | Hi Daisy,
| |
| | Thanks for all your help. This one is not over unfortunately. Once I
had
| | tracked the problem to McAfee I contact McAfee support and arranged a
| WebEx
| | session. When I tried to show the support guys the problem it wouldn't
| play
| | ball and the documents opened within seconds! I'll have to wait for it
to
| | resurface try again. One thing that I have noticed is that I am unable
to
| | remove the "use DDE" option in the file types. I deselect it close the
| dialog
| | and go back in to confirm and it is re-enabled.
| | Now if I try and open an Excel attachment/file with spaces in the
| filename I
| | get error messages saying it can't open the file. For example, if I try
| and
| | open a file with the name "This is a test.xlsx", I get error messages:
| |
| | Can't open "This.xlsx"
| | Can't open "Is.xlsx"
| | Can't open "A.xlsx"
| | "Can't open Test.xlsx"
| |
| | Then the file opens.
