Office 2007 File Conversion tool -- Not so practical --

I want to begin by saying that I haven't given OMPM my full attention and
time. I have just explored the OFC tool. But I'm a bit disappointed with the
results.

Like many other administrators (and complainants) I have thousands of Office
XP/2003 files in multiple network shares. Files in local folders is not much
of a concern here. My biggest issue with OFC is that you can either (1) leave
the converted files in the original folder or (2) it can copy the tree
structure elsewhere and place the converted files there. But normally users
have office and non-office files (PDFs, JPEGs, TXTs, etc...) together in
folders and solution (1) leaves you with old and new files (doc and docx, xls
and xlsx, etc) and solution (2) leaves you with the original tree (old office
files plus non-office files) and a second tree with just the converted files.

Isn't there a tool that can move the old and converted files out to a tree
like in the solution (2) above and place the newly converted files in the
source path?

Has anyone scripted OFC to do this?

Is there any third party software that can do a better job?

My Office 2007 deployment date approaches and I haven't been able to solve
this issue.

PLEASE HELP!
