Office 2007 H&S licensing

P

pawhe955

I am investigating obtaining a H&S license of Office 2007 to support my kids
education. However, it would be useful to have Outlook 2007 on the main PC....

The MS Office site seems to suggest that there is only one H&S edition, and
that doesn't include Outlook. It also states that the license allows 3
concurrent installations/concurrent use.

Of course I want it at the most "cost-effective" price I can get it - and
have found a website purporting to be a Microsoft Gold Certified
Partner/Microsoft Authorised Education Reseller, offering *multiple* H&S
editions of Office 2007 (e.g. Standard, Pro Plus, Enterprise, etc.), each of
which can (according to the website) be installed on only 2 PCs concurrently
(a main machine, and a portable machine used by the primary user... blah
blah.) And they only ship "CD Mailer"/"Media Kit" (no boxes, by the sounds of
it).

Instinct (of course) says stay clear - but the Website appears legit, and
I'm now curios as to know if the software they are selling can legitimately
be sold under the H&S license. (Or are they selling OEM software under the
guise of being for Educational use/Students).

Can anyone say for certain that only ONE H&S edition is available for
purchase *directly* by the general public (e.g. not perhaps through your own
academic organisation) - and how do I contact MS UK to ask these "pre-sales"
questions about their software, and also to check the validity of a company
purporting to be a Gold Partner/Authorised reseller? (Navigating the
website, support/contact appears to be based on post-sales technical support,
not pre-sales questions and questions about resellers...).

Cheers,

You can buy Office 2007 Pro Educational Version direct from www.dabs.co.uk
(As well as other online suppliers) for £148.03 inc vat
They supply a cd, there are no 'proof of education hoops' to go through.
You could also probably buy from your local PC World, John Lewis & others

The Pro version is Licensed to install on two Pc's, theoretically, Desktop &
Laptop for the same user

The H& S version is licensed to install on 3 PC's but of course there is no
Outlook
Outlook can be purchased seperately for about £80, and installed with a
single H&S installation.

I assume your kids are not at uni

There is only ONE Home and Student edition and it does not include Outlook.
There are academic versions that are available to qualified
students/faculty/employees of many secondary ed institutions and those may
be Office Pro, etc. I believe that the UK does have a different
interpretation of "academic license" tho.

Thanks for the replies.

Must admit, I thought that the Pro & other alternatives to the 'one and
only' H&S edition were only available via the actual educational facility
that you were attending, as part of a Vol. Lic. Agreement - e.g. the
organisation were the licensee - and would not be available direct to the
general public from the likes of Dabs, etc.

Even *more* digging and I've actually found a direct link from MS' website
to the website that I initially came across and was referring to - so I can
but assume that they are 100% legitimate.

I guess the only choice I have to make now is a product with fewer
components that can be installed on 3 PCs, or a more fully featured version
(e.g. including Outlook) that can only be installed on 1/2.

Anyway, thanks for the information.

Cheers,

In the UK it used to be the case that you purchased an Academic version from
your choice of retailer, the MS box contained no cd but only a form that you
had to submit to MS uk, once it had been signed by the educational
establishment, MS then sent the CD.
This process was discontinued many years ago, MS now relies on a persons
integrity, so anyone can purchase it.
