Office 2007 Prof. constant crashing

S

Scholte

Many components of Office 2007 Prof. keep crashing, i.e. Outlook [at least 10
times a day], Word [several times per day], Power Point.
My computer is up to date and has excellent firewall and virusscanner.
Ran Diagnostic Tools: no problems found.
Cleaned registry: no difference.
Contacted Microsoft Holland: no real help there.
In the mean time the problem is getting worse.
Can anyone help me with a solution please?

Hi Scholte,

You haven't provided much to go on. What version of Windows, what brand of antivirus, what printer brand and version, what other
software or add-ins are you using, what are the steps you're using when Word crashes and what is the exact error message.

Is it only on old files, or on new ones, etc.

If you're using a 3rd party registry cleaner that can sometimes lead to more issues. I've had to reinstall Windows then Office etc
fresh on occassion from that when nothing else worked.

Scholte, I had the same experience with the trial version of Office 2007.
Excel (the app I use the most), kept crashing intermittently without any
apparent reason. Since I didn't like the UI at all, my solution was to get
rid of Office 2007 and revert to Office 2003. All the crashing issues have
disappeared since then.

HTH!

Hi Karin,

The crash information you listed for Word shows the HP driver and there have been a number of reports of issues with the PhotoSmart
software when that printer is set as the default printer. Try changing to a different default printer to start, also check to see
if your Adobe Acrobat (if you have more than just the Reader) product has all updates applied.

Before starting any of the office apps use
Start=>Search and recycle files found using
~$*.*;*.tmp
to clear out leftovers.

Hello Bob,
Thank you very much for replying again. I have followed your instructions
for recycling the mentioned temp.files. However, I don't know which other
printer to make default, since this is the only printer connected. Unless you
mean the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer. The question then is how to
use the HP printer still and can I still use the fax, which is also part of
this printer/scanner. I do recall with my previous HP printer that I was not
supposed to use the HP Director, because of similar problems. In itself of
course a ridiculous fact. I have also contacted HP, but no answer there yet.
In the mean time the problem continues and I can't get my work done properly.
Would you please be so kind to keep advising me of possible solutions?
Thanking you again,
Karin

Hi Karin,

For the purposes of testing to see if it is the HP printer that is causing the problem, setting the MS Office Document Image Writer
as a default should be fine.

You can still use all of the features of the HP Printer, but would need to choose to send items to it each time for the time being.

Hello Bob,
Sorry for not getting back sooner, but I have been waiting for my computer
expert to have a look at the problem also. He tells me there is a small file
in Office 2007, entered with the servicepack 2 update, which is causing the
problem (in this case with powerpoint, however similar with word, etc.):
Faulting application powerpnt.exe, version 12.0.4518.1014, stamp 45428035,
faulting module mso.dll, version 12.0.4518.1014, stamp 4542867b, debug? 0,
fault address 0x003785f6.
It seems to be the mso.dll file. Apparently this is something he and his
collegues have come across more and does not occur when mentioned update is
not installed. Reinstalling Office 2007 does not take care of this problem.
By now this is all higher computer-intelligence so I am lost I think. And in
the mean time the problem still isn't solved.
Would you be so kind again to see if you can help me or would the best way
to go now be completely reinstalling the computer?
Thanking you again in advance,
regards,
Karin

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

Hi Karin,

The only service pack for Office 2007 is SP1, but the MSO.dll file is one of the central parts of the MS Office Suite, shared by
each of the apps, and it is not uncommon for it to be updated in service packs or even security updates.

In a posting in another, Word application errors discussion group, there were copies of a couple of email from HP tech support with
HP's tech support folks appearing to say they're working on a solution other than the Dec 2007 solution of not using certain HP
printers as the default, but sending a request for your particular printer to the HP support folks couldn't hurt :)

Hello Bob,
Thank you for your speedy reply again. You wouldn't believe the emails,
chats and conversations I had with HP about this problem. And although they
were very friendly, unfortunately to no avail. No matter what I said, the
advise was always: reinstall the software, either with or without having to
go "msconfig" first. So I am truly lost now and the Office applications as
well as Internet Explorer keep freezing, or shutting down with the error
messages and reopening with blank documents, power points, etc. The only
improvement so far really is that Outlook performs reasonably well at the
moment. Do you think that formatting the PC and reinstalling everything might
be a solution?
Kind regards,
Karin

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

Hi Karin,

Have you tried setting your default to a different, non HP-printer such as one of the downloadable PDF printers http://primopdf.com
or http://cutepdf.com, or the optional install MS Office 2007 Document Image writer for example, then restarting the PC to see if
you have different results?

Depending on the HP Printer model, one of the following HP msgs that others have copied from HP emails could apply if that doesn't
work.
"We have a known compatibility issue with Microsoft word 2007. We are working on it and soon will be releasing a solution for it.
However, I appreciate
your efforts in trying to resolve this issue. I regret for the inconvenience
caused. However, as a work around please perform the following steps:

Work around 1: Please select any other printer (if any) as default printer
in Printers and faxes folder. (Please perform the following steps)

1. Click on Start and open Control Panel.

2. Open Printers and Faxes.

3. Right click on any printer icon other than HP Photosmart C4380 all in
one and select as ' Set this printer as Default printer'.
Now verify the result.

If you do not have any other printer icon in Printers and Faxes folder,
please perform Work around 2.

Work around 2:
1. Click Start and open Printers and Faxes.

2. On the left side of the page near the top, click Add a printer.

3. In the Add printer box, double-click Add a local printer.

4. Click Use an existing port, and then click Next.

5. Under Manufacturer, click the manufacturer of your printer, for example,
HP, and then under Printers, click the different printer that your
manufacturer recommended, for example HP DeskJet 550c.

6. If you see "Which version of the driver do you want to use?" click Use
the driver that is currently installed (recommended), and then click Next.

7. Click to select the Set as the default printer check box, click Next, and
then click Finish.

8. In the Printers and Faxes folder, double-click the new printer.

9. On the Printer menu, click Properties.

10. On the Ports tab, click to select the appropriate port check box for
your printer, and then click OK. For example, you can select LPT1 if your
printer is connected to your computer (LTP1 is a port that is used by most
computers to communicate with a local printer).

I understand from your mail that 'an application failure' error message
appears after exiting Word 2007. I regret for the inconvenience caused to you
and I will certainly assist you in this regard. I seek your kind cooperation.
This issue could occur be related to startup entries running in the
background. Please perform below steps to isolate the issue:

Disabling HP related files from the Startup:
============================================
1.Click Start Icon.

2.Select "run" or select the "Search" box and type msconfig.

3.User Account window may pop up with this message "Windows need your
permission".

4.Click continue.

5.Select statup tab.

6.Disable all hp related entries.

7.Restart the computer.

8.Once the computer is restarted, it will show that some startup entries are
bloked. Ignore this message and continue.

If the issue persists, please uninstall and reinstall the software:

Click Accessories.

Click System Tools.

Click Disk Cleanup.

On the Disk Cleanup Options window, click My files only or Files from all
users on this computer .

In the Drives drop-down list, select the drive to clean up and then click OK.

On the Disk Cleanup utility report that displays, select the appropriate
check boxes to remove the unnecessary components and then click OK.

C:\Windows\System32 folder.

Click Start and then click Accessories.

Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator.

Type the following in the command prompt:
CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
(or the appropriate folder location where VBSCRIPT.DLL is located).

Press Enter.

Type REGSVR32 VBSCRIPT.DLL in the command prompt and press Enter.
A message displays that VBSCRIPT has been installed successfully.

Copy the URL starting from "http" till "2093" and paste in the address box of
the browser, then press Enter Key.

I believe performing the above steps will resolve the issue. If you need
further assistance, please do reply with the observations and results. This
will help me to assist you further, and I thank you for being a valuable HP
customer.

Have a Nice Time.
Sincerely,
Jennifer
