Office 2007: Roaming Users' Quick Access Toolbars

S

StefanKZVB

On my Office 2007 RTM installation I just discovered the QAT files are
located in the %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Office
folder.

Because the "Local Settings"-folder is not roamed, users logging on to a
different computer will not have their QAT but on each machine will have to
start with a new QAT. :-(

Is there a way to specify the location of the QAT files so they would be put
in the user's home directory or at least in a roaming part of the profile?

Suggestion for Microsoft:
Please put all user-specific things like the QAT-files in the roaming part
of the user profiles by default and make those locations user-definable as
well (if they aren't yet)

Where is the response on this???? This is the dumbest thing I have seen
Microsoft do in a long time. Is the office team not aware of ROAMING
PROFILES?

Where is the microsoft response on this?

thanks,
Wes

Microsoft generally doesn't participate in these newsgroups. These are
overwhelmingly peer supported (meaning other users like you) newsgroups.

If Microsoft doesn't response here, the problem should be at least documented
in the ORK for 2007 - in an article about roaming users.

I asked about this. The QAT files don't roam. There is no way anywhere
to specify a location for them.
I suppose you could work around the problem by writing logon and logoff
scripts to copy the files from and to a roaming location. I know it's a
pain, but considering that there is no (easy) way to push a customized
ribbon to users, a small pain...

So there's an official statement now - I hope MS accepts your idea as a
supported workaround and documents it in the KB and ORK till there's a better
way - delivered with a hotfix or service release.

Our server administrator and me also thought about implementing the copying
of the qat files via group policies' login-/logoff-scripts if there's no
other possibility to do that. Of course we would have preferred if the QAT
files could have been redirected to another location.

Regarding pushing a customized QAT (you mean the QAT? - for distributing a
customized Ribbon the RibbonCustomizer helps a lot, i think):
I suppose you can give an initial customized QAT to users at least with RTM
by simply distributing the QAT files on installation. But when the user
resets his QAT it should also return to the customized initial state. Don't
know if this can be done as well but it's of course lower priority than
making the QAT roam...

Actually, I could write a community KB for this...I'll have to think
about it.

That's what I mean, GPO scripts.
Regarding pushing a customized QAT (you mean the QAT? - for distributing a

RibbonCustomizer isn't really suited well for doing that, but we'll see
how it goes. I have some thoughts on a specific add-in geared towards
that situation, but we'll see...

Hi Sloan,

Is the 2007 ORK going or a KB article in work to document that the .QAT files aren't supported in roaming and offer a workaround
method, scripting, etc?
