My company wanted to use the feature of shared templates to be used
companywide within Word and Excel. I set the path of the Workgroup Templates
to a network share that contained some company standard templates. Now, I
have various users who cannot close Word or Outlook, as they get the message
that the normal.dot or normalemail.dot is being changed and do you want to
save the new version. After some investigation, I noticed that there is a
copy of each normal file in the network share, being used by 2 or 3 people at
a time. My question is, why is Word going to the network share to store and
use the normal.dot file, rather than use the local copy on the workstation? I
did not change the path on the user template option, only the workgroup
template. It is totally arbitrary when Word will use the normal.dot file on
the server or use the local one, and the one that shows it using the copy on
the server, the file path shows the user template pointed to the local
normal.dot file.
